Does anyone else not like silkies?

People who don't like silkies are big fat meanies.

I have had one or two in the past. I just don't care for them. I've seen some that are kind of cute, but for the most part I think they are unattractive.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, though.

I generally like chickens that look like chickens.... not two legged sheep dogs.

Well I love silkies lol They are not for the people looking for eggs or meat. They are not to economical and require a lot of work to keep them up also. I must say that it is very much worth it! If you get good quality ones, they are much softer and better looking. The more you fool with them, they nicer they are. I also like silkies because they are the most unique and distinct breed out there!

I bet the main reason people dont like them is because they dont lay a lot of eggs. They would then be of no use to farmers.

Well I just lost the two I had and will not get any more they are way to high maintanace. I will say my hen was the best mom ever and I do miss her but again not enough to get anymore cochins are my favorite birds.

Personally, I like my chickens to look like chickens! That being said, I do have a Silkie. (I had 2 but there was an "incident"

) I bought them out of pity from the local feed store where they were buried in a pen of started (and might I add debeaked

) RSL's. I named them Ursula & Agnes. My sister & I actually googled "ugly names" to come up with those. Anyway, Ursula is the grouchiest, noisiest chicken I have. She is white, and is also the dirtiest. She always has her beard & head all wet from the waterer, and then collects all sorts of dirt.

And don't even get me started about what she looks like when she's been digging around the yard for insects!
So, no, I can't say the breed is one I'd get a lot of, but she is certainly a character and I think I'll keep her.
Not to mention she just hatched the cutest chick by my Mille Fleur bantam cochin roo and she's been a great mom. I think I may try to sneak her some hatching eggs in the Spring.

Oh, and my grandfather is always asking about her. He calls her my "real pretty chicken". Eh, to each his own I guess.

I had 4 at one time, 3 hens and a cockerel. I got sucked into the silkie craze briefly. I don't HATE them persay but I will say they are dumber then a box of rocks and those hens made ALOT of noise. I got rid of a pair and kept 2 hens for myself for brooding purposes. Both girls went broody on eggs and hatched chicks together, taking turns raising the babies. That was sooo sweet to watch but the novelty wore off quick and I parted with those 2 as well. They were brooding machines and never laid eggs or really acted like a chicken should, all they cared about is boosting the population here which is great for some people but just not my cup of tea. Will I ever get another? NO WAY! Love my cochins, EE's seramas, and other mixed breed bantams.
