I hate silkies I dont know why people like them....I dont even think they are catagorized as a chicken.....Someone try to change my mind or agree with me. I feel like the only one that doesnt like them

You aren't the only one... I board some here but they are not mine. I just don't care for them (you know I mean I don't like them... I do feed and water them! lol). They are odd and I don't think they are "all that". The males seem a bit hard on the females too.... at least compared to my other birds.

They aren't that soft either! You would think they would be... but my Barnevelders are 10 times more soft.

Anyways... you are not alone. I could pass on a free silkie anyday... "No thanks!" lol

I wouldn't have one but my daughter likes them

bantam cochins are much sweeter softer and much better kids chickens than a silkie

So,I'm guessing you don't want to buy some of these here

I had a couple, several years ago. I was still inexperienced and a friend conned me into taking 2 cockerels. I thought they were ugly, and the 1 would attack me as I put the food dish down, every single day. I just don't think they are very attractive, but that's my personal opinion. I'm sure there are people out there who think my mixed breed EE's are not pretty, and that's ok, too. To each her own.

I happen to like them. However, I have both Silkies and 'layers' (mixed flock of birds for eggs and pets) located in different coops. My Silkies don't act like any other chicken I know. They aren't very active at all, aren't too loud, and after 6 months I'm still waiting for my first egg.

But I like their disposition, how I can throw some new chicks into the group for the first time and how the others will 'take them under their wings'. How every evening when I close the coop door and peek in to see the oldest female snuggling with the young chicks and the rooster standing on the other side of the coop keeping watch at the window.

Without the last features, they wouldn't be so special to me. But I think it's SO MUCH EASIER to get more Silkies and not have to worry about anyone killing each other, as opposed to getting more of another breed and throwing them into the lion's den with the layers. That's just me. I hate having to deal with bullying.

That's all.

And you are far fron the only one who doesn't like them: alot of people don't. They're an acquired taste.

Their feet get so nasty and dirty with all those feathers. I love the bright blue ear spots though. Now I want some bantam cochins.

I like them for their personality as moms/caregivers. Whenever I have baby chicks, I can just put a girl silkie (even one that's just a few months old) in with them and she'll take them under her wing and mother them right away. I haven't had other breeds that do that. I don't know if that's how all silkies are though, or just the ones I've had. I do have a friend locally that experienced the exact same thing though, so I know it can't be that rare.

I dont like them either , I dont hate them though, just wouldnt own one. But I know alot of folks really love them and thats great for them. maybe they are an aquired taste like the polish princess says , its just ataste I hope I dont aquire ever. LOL
