Does anyone have a Peacock?

Ooooo Deerman, pretty, pretty, pretty!

Goodness now I'm finding out about all of the different colours! Some of them are just stunning.

How many of you actually let yours range your property?
This one I'm getting is still a younger bird, not fully feathered out yet but I'm still wondering if down the line I want to let him roam the property or build him a large enclousure.
I have to admit I would love to see him on my property, but I worry about at night, will he come back to roost or just camp out in a tree?
Once you let them free range like that do they become less like pets and will they leave?

No. They stay 'sweet'. In some cases, they actually become tamer upon release. Like this one adult spalding hen, she was always on the skittish side.. okay with me being in the pen with her, refuses to approach me and quick to panic if she thinks I'm gonna try to catch her, though.. but if anybody else is visible in the yard, she freaks out big time.

It's her freaking out that resulted in her being free range right now. I was gone on vacation and asked my father to check in, feed and water if necessary. During one of his visits, he said she freaked out really bad and escaped by banging through the top(evidently part of it had loosened). He and a neighbor tried to catch her(haha! Spaldings are GOOD fliers, way better than Indians). Anyways she stayed around and now approaches me all the time, something she never, ever did during the 4 years I had her in a pen. Shows no inclination of leaving either, hangs around in my one acre yard really good.

I would love to have more peafowl loose however only have one acre and the side fence I share with neighbor is only 5 feet high and they hop that all too easily so I keep only a few loose out of 'neighborly consideration' and only those that stay IN my yard most of the time. All of them stay tame.

most of mine are penned, because of breeding the colors. Free range some blues. They will roost high in the tree. Remember when the peahen goes setting she will be there for 28day. Predator may pick them off. the white are easy pickings if free range.

We had ours penned for the first month or so and they didnt seem happy so we turned them out and they havent been penned since. They roost in our barns (3) and sometimes in the coop with the chickens. When they arent in our barns they roost in the neighbors barn or in the trees.

Thanks 1much, like to share pics.

The one is a peach white eye. the eyes of the train feathers are white.

Thats my pick , and the bronze color.

Cant wait until they get their train feathers back.

So they won't take off if they are free range? I was wanting to get a pair or so, but my dad told me they would go into the woods and not come back. In my area, a pair would sell for at least $75, and I haven't gotten any because that is a lot of money for me to throw away!
