I found this thread and am getting my FIRST ducklings on the 25th! They are black Cayugas and im in the process of clearing bramble to set up their pen when they feather out. I hope to have 2-3 breeding pairs who will have 2 acres to freerange during the day, but I want a smaller pen to close them up at night and in bad weather. So far ive cleared 10x20 feet of bramble and BlackBerry bushes long side our pigeon loft and backing our creek. I figured each pair would get themselves a mini doghouse to sleep in and get locked into at night but how big should the pen itself be for 4-6 adult Cayugas to be content locked up for the day ? I had a pair of Pekins years ago someone didn't want after the outgrew their baby fluff and said they'd sell them to be eaten otherwise but we had a heavily enclosed 15x15 chicken run in side our 2 lot fenced backyard they could sleep in at night and a under house compartment, so we never had to build ANYTHING for them .

Blizzard was overseeing my bushwacking work.

Okay - I have a question for this thread...why do ducks POOP MORE THAN ANY ANIMAL ON THE PLANET?
I clean my duck house every day, picking up wet, poopy straw. Every morning it looks like they had a frat party in there overnight.

The one thing I’ve enjoyed about winter (as far as duck care goes) has been the relative ease of picking up frozen poop nuggets (rather than wet and smooshy poop) . Of course, dumping the wheelbarrow isn’t so easy with feet of snow on the ground, but ... well... I have to find something positive about winter! :hmm

I have a female 1yr old Pekin that falls forward and lands on her back when trying to get up. She can not walk. I’ve looked her over and I can’t see anything wrong with her. Legs look fine, her feet are fine (no Bumblefoot). Nothing feels warm to the touch. She is very dirty and don’t understand why. None of the other ducks look this dirty. Does anyone have any ideas? I hate to loose her she is my friendliest duck and will eat out of our hand and let us pet her.

That sounds bad!. Shes dirty must be from not bathing and not being able to clean herself

When ducks are done bathings they rub themselfs all over with their bills and it spreads water proof oils around to get their feathers dry and clean

Is your duck crested? can we get some pictures? how long has this been happening?

I would personaly give her a nice warm bath in the bathtub then give her a nice cardboard box to sleep in, in a nice quiet dark space to rest

When did she lay last? And good idea what Jpat said about bringing her inside let her have a nice warm bath (with supervision) something to sleep in where she can have some peace and quiet. Can you post some pics of her and her poop. Is she eating and drinking?
She lays a egg everyday still. But every time I go out there she is on her back and can’t right herself. She eats and drinks like normal. I do tho have to bring her there. I will get pics this weekend. I was also thinking the same thing about bringing her in. Do you think she also needs some niacin? They get peas and lettuce as treats everyday. They get their duck crumble in their feeder. I didn’t think with their crumble that I would have to d niacin always like I did when they were little but I guess it wouldn’t hurt.
