Does anyone here take their birds in to be processed?

I use Grap Brothers Slaughter House (Hans and Christian Grap pronounced like Grop)
55 Langford Creek Rd. Van Etten NY 14889 1-607-589-6844
They are really good guys, been doing it along time.Kinda look like they are from the old country. Not a fancy spead, but get the job done and appreciate your business.Last thing they say as you leave "have a nice year".

Will,
Thanks for the info! I'm going to look into them. Hopefully I'll get the courage up to do one or 2 here and there. But I would like to raise some broilers and have them processed.

I live in Putnam County, NY and would be willing to slaughter someone's birds if they didn't want to do it themselves. I've done it several times before with guinea fowl, chicken and grouse

Thanks, Suzy! I'll keep you in mind. So far, I'm a chicken to do it myself.

Hi,
Okay, sounds good. I'm a licensed by the Dept. of Environmental Conservation as a Wildlife Rehabilitator and have worked with some pretty icky things. As long as something isn't my pet, I'm okay with "processing". I once did a deer by myself (not an easy feat considering that I didn't own a bone saw!)

Wow, I don't know how anyone could make a living processing chickens for those prices. Apparantly they are way more skilled & efficient than I am, and probably have some commercial-grade equipment. I don't mind taking the time to butcher our own, but I would never butcher for anyone else for such a low price. Make sure to thank these folks nicely.

I think a good way to see if you could handle doing the job yourself is to watch/work alongside someone else who knows how to do it. You might find it's not as bad as you think. It's certainly not my favorite job on the place, and not as delightful as gathering eggs or picking produce, but I find myself more than compensated by the glow of smug satisfaction I feel knowing I have accomplished this essential survival task: I have put meat on my table.

I am in East TN and looking for a source to process our birds. I've tried internet searches and calling co-ops with no luck. Anyone in the area? Thanks.

Well lharper, we're in the same boat. Hummm, kees - interested in a road trip to Arkansas?!

I'm near Fort Smith and Hooligan gave me a good lead but they only do big stuff (sheep, deer, etc.). They referred me to someone else who also only handles the big game. I asked at the feed stores and they have no idea. They looked at me like I was the sissy I am!

Is anyone here (any Okies (hummmm, Buckguy!!) either willing to do the processing for a fee, or can refer me to someone in the Ft. Smith AR area. I'll even travel - up to Tulsa area & over to OK City area. Anyone??

I know my butcher told me he uses a rope cutter to take their heads off, then when they come out of the hot water they go in his drum plucker and he can put 3 at a time in there and it takes about 40 seconds to defeather the three,by the time it takes to grab three more they are ready to come out.I'm sure the equipment makes it much faster.
It sounds like there is a call for poultry butchers all over. Will

This is truly the hardest part for me.

I'm a avid hunter and fisherman. I clean alot of fish and game, however the home raised chickens are really hard for me to harvest.

It works best for me to plan ahead and get started at daybreak....remove the cull and get er done. It is the hardest for the first time, and someway becomes a little easier after you realize it has to be done, especially when it is because of too many cockerals, and the pullets are subject to abuse.

In my case the remorse is always there, cause i respect life so much....but also the reason why I have to practice good flock management all the time.

Lol,
A road trip to Arkansas? I don't have any processing equipment, just a sharp knife, good cutting board and the desire to eat organic food when possible. I can't stand knowing that so many animals are raised and then slaughtered under horrendous conditions, but I'm not a vegetarian either. I feel that if I choose to eat me, then I shouldn't hand the dirty work to someone else. A living creature gave it's life to me. Though butchering isn't pleasant, it does affect my food choices and forces me to appreciate how lucky I am to have something on my table to eat.

I just sent you a PM, and now I see that you had already sent me one on 4/12. Oops! I'll have to check that more often.

I'm by Alma, and I would appreciate the processors name and address, just in case I can't find any local Amish.

We shoot for 20 every other week throughout the summer.

I am the same way I will eat meat without a problem but I HATE the site of blood. When I was little I used to have nightmare when I watched my dad clean fish

so I don't know what I would do at the sight of chicken guts! I llive in mid kansas does anybody know how I would go about finding someone to butcher. I actually would like to fatten up a turkey for thanksgiving, my other half says no (he doesn't think I could butcher it) so maybe if I find a butcher he will be more convinced.
