But dont forget that rescue dogs can come with baggage. They have often not been raised well, and that doesnt mean abused, but sometimes simply spoiled. They are also often the product of BYB purebreds making an oops litter, or are BYB purebreds themselves. Rescuing a dog is a noble act, and an option, but realize what you are possibly getting into. I am all for rescue, I do rescue, but there are pros and cons to it too.

Regarding breeds for the OP - what energy level are you able to deal with? The medium-large breeds will be more able to be handled by smaller kids, but they are usually much higher energy which can lead to problem behavior. The large-extra large breeds may knock your kids over and not respond to them trying to lead them around etc, but they are generally calmer.

I wouldnt suggest an LGD if you have your heart set on a dog who will stay with you off leash. Even on 70 acres, they can wander. Not all do, but you have to understand some will, no matter how much you try to train them not to. Thousands of years of working independently have wired them to believe that absolute obediece is optional. If you did go with one, I'd suggest a Pyr or Anatolian. Kuvs are tougher dogs.

The dogs I usually suggest to people who arent quite ready for the independent nature of an Anatolian are Leonbergers, Greater Swiss Mtn Dogs and Bernese Mtn Dogs.
Bullmastiffs are good too, although they can be surprisingly energetic and rather exuberant. Newfs are nice but there is a lot of coat care and drool.

I do know a breeder of Cane Corsos whose dogs are sugar sweet, if you want her info, PM me.

hi,
i rescued my catahoula and she was very aggressive but well worth it in the end.But i was single then and no kids.i would have never brought her home to them like she was.the only problem with rescues is there are very few purebred puppies and i don't know how the adults were treated or why they were given up.as far as the mixed dogs ,like another poster said it is most likely strays or irresponible breeders who don't have the best interest in the outcome.what if 2 dogs got together where both were aggressive and/or had health problems.you would never know that until its too late.
i am a retired vet tech of 15 years and have "put down" alot of dogs because no one adopted them(no other reasons).most all of them were mixes.i have taken some in to foster and found homes for several strays.i am close with our animal control office and donate supplies frequently but i tend to like purebreds better.since dogs are bred for distinct purposes i can narrow down my desires to fit what i am looking for. we don't have alot of purebreds in our local shelters.
i appreciate good breeders and all of the hard work that goes into it so we can get great dogs.

i am happy you have a great dog and he sounds like he is happy as well.how could someone throw a puppy over a bridge ?did you see them do that?

Oh good, so you do have a bit of background beyond owning a few dogs. I'm glad you can see both sides and sounds like you are trying to make a responsible and informed decision.

its not just adult dogs that get abandoned in shelters.
puppies come with less baggage.

and no we didnt
we heard crying and yelpings.
and found 2 tiny puppies sitting on the bank trying to hide in the weeds.
and a soggy cardboard box in the shallow water.

have you maybe looked at specific breed rescues then.
if you prefer purebreds.
not just muts get dumped.
(not preachin i swear.)
just suggesting options.
we also have purebred dogs (personally i prefer our muts)

I love collies but they could nip when when kids are running, as could any dog but collies do tend to be mouthy. Mine have always loved kids though. My suggestion is really about having your kids do the feeding and obedience training so the dog(s) bond to them rather than just you.

i don't think the livestock dogs will work for the kids.they are so serious and don't really play,at least not the ones i know.not sure how they would be if the kids were its job tho.
i have only met one BMD and it was owned by a vet.this dog was a handful to say the least.always challenging her and even hurting her.now i wouldn't have put up with that but maybe twice so it was probably just her and not the dog.
newfies are a delight,i forgot about those.i just wonder how they would do in Ga heat and it would be in the house.i can handle the hair but don't know about the drool.i could do a lip tuck, tho.
my son is 6 and daughter is 3.he is ready for a dog to grow up with.he is putting my heeler on a leash and feeding her and walking her.but she still only responds if i say its ok.

i just have a picture in my head of the kids and a big hairy dog.IDK

thats horrible.glad it has a happy ending.
would love to have caught the people that did that tho.

i have looked for heeler pups at our shelter to maybe foster them but have never seen one.they say heeler mix but they are so far off.i do keep an eye on that.

i have and i am trying to learn more about certain breeds so i can research them a bit.nothing like hearing from someone who actually has one vs.reading it ya know.
