well thats good news then - if you see 4 slats in the back (like a frame) then thats called a stretcher. If you see "pegs" in the corners of the stretcher, those are what tighten the stretcher and keep it together. Do you see staples or wooden triangles in the corners? That in itself will help date it. Also how its made (the stretcher itself) will tell alot - is it mortise and tenon? Pegged? Slatted? All these things help date paintings as well as frames.

If no one smoked (unless it was the previous owner) then the dirt can be from being exposed to the daily elements; cooking, dust, etc. You'd be surprised how fast paintings get dirty.
