My chickens do this weird thing where they put hay on their backs after they lay eggs. Does anyone know why they do this?

They usually do that while laying the egg, never saw it after they lay the egg. I think it’s harmless, but interesting nonetheless. My chickens do this weird thing where they put hay on their backs after they lay eggs. Does anyone know why they do this?
Ah!! That makes sense!! Thanks for the info!!It is their instinctive way of camouflaging themselves.
I have heard that the egg laying song is the chicken's way of saying' "Hey! There is a safe place to lay an egg here!! I just did!!"I have never seen that behavior in my chickens. But I hear lots of egg songs when they were actively laying eggs. I read they sing the egg song after laying an egg to reintroduce themselves to the flock when they head back out to the chicken run from the nest box. Don't know if that is true, but it's a good story.
