Does anyone turn the heat off?

I always used 75watt flood lights from Wally World. They USED to come in blue, green, and RED, but nowadays they seem to only come in "anti-bug yellow" so yellow it is for the chickies

This time of year though, in Arkansas, mine are outside without any heat after about a week old. It's what, 85 at night?

I think you should keep the door opening and let the cooler air in.Chicks also need to breathe fresh air!!!At the same time,It's better to keep the lamp on!!

I have 3 little ones in the house, my older ones are in the coop...I have a 250 heat bulb on them, but only at night, I even have the window cracked a bit, gets pretty toasty in the room...I also have a thermometer in the brooder ( a large Rubbermaid box), I adjust according to what they want, they are 8 days old, and already comfortable at 80*...they will tell you. I don't like the regular light bulbs, they seem to cringe when I tried it, too bright, so go at least with a bug light, or other colored bulb.

I know wally world still has 100w bulbs not a big selection of incandescent bulbs any more. 94 cents for 4

Yeah, thanks to our know it all government, we child-like imbeciles will not be able to buy what we want at the store. Here is the timeline:

100 watt bulbs to be discontinued on 1/1/2012.
75 watt bulbs to be discontinued on 1/1/2013
The rest will be discontinued on 1/1/2014.

There is a plan afoot to reverse this upcoming law.

Now I am for energy savings as much as the next guy, and I have a ton of florescent bulbs all over the house, BUT I need incandescent lighting
wherever I use a dimmer, and I built my house with a lot of dimmers, so I am going to be out money when I have to change out those switches.
Also florescent lighting will not work with dimmers nor can they be used as a heat source, so there go our brooders.

Thank you, Washington D.C.!

There, got that off my chest.

Seriously? That sure explains the selection of them decreasing. I've always used a 75 watt bulb. I guess we should go stock up! Otherwise I'll have to brood in a baby pool and have one of those energy sapping 250 w things. I've never used one of those, they just get too hot. My one brooder, I have a clip inside for the lamp, and when it's time to reduce it, it goes on top of the wire above, moving it a foot and reducing the heat to a level good enough until they go outside.

We don't have any Wally Worlds here in Southeastern PA. I'll stick with the 250w since I spent like $20 for it online. Might as well use it.

It's much nicer in here today with the door open. I liked having the door closed just so I wouldn't have to police my not-quite 2 year old (she can't open doors yet).

Yeah, thanks DC. Ah well... Light bulbs don't go bad, eh? Maybe the next time I see 100w incandescents, I'll buy up the lot of them. Though this is my 1st batch of chickens, I'm sure that it won't be the last!

Keep your eye on the calendar. You have five months and counting to buy these if you can find them. OR you can move to Texas where I see that they
are going to pass a state law to make this whole shutdown illegal.

Hehe... No moving to Texas for me. I like my 4 seasons here in PA! If they are still being made, then they should be available online. Even if they are all made in China. Couldn't get around that anyway, I'd suppose.
