Our two roos were well loved right up to the minute they got the axe. They lived a cushy life, and had fun while it lasted. They did not EVER have to go through any of the heinous scenarios that grocery-store chickens go through. And in the end, they were able to be useful not only in life, but in death as well.
I just can't see wasting that good meat, and personally, I wouldn't insult the bird by wasting it either. Now that's just my opinion. I couldn't eat my cat, for instance, but then I wasn't raised to eat cat, either. Some are.
My lovely laying ladies will also add to the stewpot when it's their time to go, and in order that they might taste a little better, I probably won't keep them around for 10 yrs, as that would be some pretty tough meat. On the other hand, if they are still laying at age 10, heck, that's pretty darn useful.
I'm not even much of a meat eater, I just can't stand to see the waste.
