Does everyone here kill their chickens after they stop producing eggs?

I tried to sell some of mine and when they came to pick them up I changed my mind....could not stand to see them go...............They have a good retirement home with me!

In answer to your question, no. All my girls (and my 1 roo

) have forever homes with me. Doesn't matter if they're laying or not. They'll all be little granny chickens pecking around and not worrying about the Crock Pot.

The only way that I would kill any of my chickens was if I got some Cornish Xs or some breed like that in the future knowing not to get attached to them and to not give them names since they were going to end up in the stew pot. That's the only way I would kill any chickens I have. But like I said, all my hens and my roo have a forever home with me being loved and cared for.

We replace our flock every year, about 200 pullets. We use our hens for egg production and want efficiency. We butcher some of the spent hens for our home use, the rest we sell or custom butcher for customers. We raise the hens for fun, but mostly for profit.

Our two roos were well loved right up to the minute they got the axe. They lived a cushy life, and had fun while it lasted. They did not EVER have to go through any of the heinous scenarios that grocery-store chickens go through. And in the end, they were able to be useful not only in life, but in death as well.

I just can't see wasting that good meat, and personally, I wouldn't insult the bird by wasting it either. Now that's just my opinion. I couldn't eat my cat, for instance, but then I wasn't raised to eat cat, either. Some are.

My lovely laying ladies will also add to the stewpot when it's their time to go, and in order that they might taste a little better, I probably won't keep them around for 10 yrs, as that would be some pretty tough meat. On the other hand, if they are still laying at age 10, heck, that's pretty darn useful.

I'm not even much of a meat eater, I just can't stand to see the waste.
