Does free ranging cause a decrease in egg laying?

I have tried to find this but I cannot find an answer on the forums. I began free ranging my hens about 2 months ago. Ever since, I have seen a significant decrease in egg production. I have checked the yard and I don't find random eggs under bushes and in hidden spots. A friend suggested that because I have 3 acres, they don't have access to enough water when out and about. Does this make sense? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be going on?

I think your friend might be right. You would most likely notice an INCREASE in egg-laying when you free-range your hens because of the unlimited access to fresh greens.

Hmmm... how many do water sources do I need? I will try increasing to 3. One in the coop, one on the other side of the house where they like to scratch around in under the porch and one out in the back part of the yard. The struggle is always keeping that many water sources fresh and slime free.

on three acres your hens could hide plenty of nest with out you finding them. I have 3/4 of acre and still find new nest every week depending how thick your vegetation is you would be surprised how well they can hide a nest.

I hope that is not what is happening. I guess I will have to go on another nest hunt. My lot is heavily wooded so I guess my quick sweep of the yard may have missed it.

They are very good at hiding eggs. However, eggs are high in water content, so if there is not enough water for them, it will affect laying. You can try locking them up for a few days and see how many eggs you get.
