Does it make sense to insulate part of our coop?

So my original plan was to insulate the wall of our coop and nothing else. Will this do anything if the roof isn't insulated or is all the heat going to instantly float up up and away?

Heat rises so yeah, doing the side might not be worth it. As long as they are dry and out of the wind, they do fine in the cold.

I insulated last Fall and it really helped. I insulated the walls and the roof. It is really helping now, during this heatwave! The insulation is keeping the coop cooler this Summer. I am glad I did it!

We insulated roof- walls and floor (plus planning some deep litter method through winter).

partially insulated to me never makes sense to me- see t lots with barns- only thing it seems to do is keep drafts out a bit better

Go big insulate the roof and walls- your bedding will insulate the floor

But if you can, go for all of it. We did, and we're glad we did.

We wondered about insulation too. Luckily and without knowing we choose chicks that were resistant to cold. We had to do nothing more than hang a heat lamp above the main roost during the coldest months and they were fine. Of course, as brooders we kept them in the garage under a more intense heat lamp, putting them outside during the day to acclimate them before putting them in the outside coop for good.

Yes some is better then none.. but if that was your plan then im guessing you haven't made it yet. If not then take the wall insulation and use it on the roof. But like posted, chickens do well in cold weather.

depends if you have cold hardy birds an how many you have.if you have a big coop an only a few birds yes insulaiting will help alot.if you have a good amount of bird the put off alot of heat we have never lost an adault bird due to cold weather.

I guess insulating the roof never made sense to me with the vents we have being right under the eves of the roof, again letting the air out anyways. We'll have 4 chickens in the 3x7 coop. I did get cold hardy breeds and plan on giving deep litter a try. I guess we'll go ahead and insulate the walls and see how that goes, we can always add some to the roof later if needed.

You can (we certainly do) cover the big openings in the winter to keep the draft out. I just use some thickish clear plastic. They get a little less ventillation, but I think it keeps them warmer.
