Does it matter where I buy my chicks from

I would go with a hatchery. Maybe a local farm store can add your order in when they order their own chicks that they sell?

I like the idea of buying local, but the idea of possibly getting unhealthy birds, not so much. If you go that route, you should at least make sure the breeder is NPIP certified. And yes, I have heard a lot about tractor supply's mixups!

Hi and Welcome! Is the the breed you mentioned one that you are looking for (or was it just an example?) The differences in price are all in marketing. The nighter priced chicks I would assume are green fire birds. They imported a lot of the rarer breeds on the market and then charge a large amount for them. Some people really like their birds, but I have heard that once they get them back to the US the don't do anything to improve them. What you would find at a larger commercial hatchery for that breed is about the same. They are more concerned with profits and not so much breeding to the SOP.
