Does your chicken love you?

Guess you can call me a anthropomonphdite Iffin you want to. Do I think my chickens have human emotions? How could I ever say. I put verbiage on MY emotional feelings. What other words could I use..probably a lot of different ones I choose love. They are chickens, animals. Now there are people who’s lifestyle is different than mine. They could have large amounts of birds that they keep in runs or just let them go free ranging on their property. Their only interaction is at feeding time. Or when they have to catch them for medical reasons. I had chickens 25 years ago. I fed them took good care of them had a RIR that would approach me jump up on my lap if I was sitting. I’d say to myself “oh friendly lil chicken” brush her off get the eggs and THAT was the extent of my interaction. It’s like taking care of kennels of dogs and having someone ask you about a certain dog. You could describe the dogs traits and how you feel about the dog but it is not the same as having the dog in your home, with you being in the same environment 24/7. Our language or descriptive of our personal experiences could be called anthropology. Do animals have emotions is the line where some would just say No And where I would say definitely Yes. If you’re on the outside just looking in of course you couldn’t relate. But if you spend time (yes I do have better things to do and I do have a life lol) I spend a insane amount of time WITH my chickens it fits my lifestyle and passion to be outside & garden. So please until you’ve walked in someone’s shoes don’t poo-poo their experiences if you’ve never done it. I can relate to both sides. Now I’m not angry so this is just me-posting after too much glucosamine and coffee! And it’ll make @aart laugh at my long winded anthropomorphism! But I promise you when I opened the gate to the run this morning (a foot of snow fell overnight) My Judy looked into the yard and CUSSED in chicken language of course. Good morning! Have a awesome day!

Chickens are able to feel human complex emotions and are at the intelligence level of a chimp.
Along with the imprinting process the bond is deeper.
Chickens do feel love and do appreciate everything you do for then. Chickens have amazing long term memory and they are able to make discons while weighing the prosand cons.
Hey guys...

You know how some people say "cats don't really love you, they just want to be fed, ect."? But I, as a lifetime cat owner/lover know differently. When my cat cuddles with me, making biscuits and looking up at me with that slow blink cat lovers call a "kitty kiss" and will happily leave his food when he hears me come home because MOMMA IS HOME!!! Then I know differently. He loves me and I adore him right back. He and I are strongly bonded and have been for 13 years now.
Ok, so...
We are GOING to keep chickens as soon as we move and have a new home/yard with room for chickies. I admire them; I know that lots of people say they can be affectionate, sit on your lap, enjoy being petted, etc. But we have never (yet) actually HAD chickens.

So could those of you who have, tell me... I'm sure they can feel something for a familiar person, but...how do you say what they feel? Do you think/feel that they actually feel strong affection or love, or is it just familiarity for someone who brings food or treats? If you feel that your chicken really loves you - what makes you think that? After all, we as a species are primates, so our 'signature' behaviors (hugging, kissing, staring deeply into each others' eyes, and so on) are not necessarily what a non-primate would exhibit or understand. And I struggle not to anthropomorphise the behavior of other species. So - what do you think?

How about this - chickens can be affectionate if you are open to the experience.
Oh...Absolutely!!! And they’ll seek it out. Coo when they’re happy and respond to you. It’s so subtle if I’m holding Judy she makes little clucks that is just in her chest (kinda hard to describe) she makes eye contact and does that little almost like regurgitating beak smack thingie they do. Then lays her full weight against me.

love as we understand it is a human idea. the chickens may have a fondness for you and may grow used to you being around, they may show some people favor over others, but they don't love you in the classic since of the word. IMO and the opinions of many many other highly educated people.

To answer the question: Do chickens love you?

I honestly don't know. I've never been inside my chicken's brain before.
So I have no idea if they love me or not. All I know is that I absolutely love them to the moon and back!

So, do chickens love you? Gee, I don't know. But I do know they have the ability to trust, wholly and completely. And thats almost like love, isn't it? For example, when I sit down, the little chicken in my avvy, Polly, will jump up on my lap and cuddle. She snuggles down, Maybe to get warm, most definitely to get stroked. So what if its about the warmth or even the routine? The fact is, she trusts me. To them, we are giants. And, yes, most of us eat chicken. Its hard to gain trust from prey animals like them. So even though she may not love me, I am flattered by the fact that she trusts me, and enjoys my touch. And thats enough for me!
Happy New Years Eve to you all!
:)

You shouldn't use a term without abiding by the definition of it.

Personally, I have a few chickens that like me. They'll follow me around for feed, and they trust me around their chicks, and they'll let me pick them up. But they hardly follow the classical, "love is not jealous, it does not boast, it is not self-serving, it is not irritable, and keeps no record of being wronged" definition of love. {EDT: and I am certain that is a paraphrase. Please excuse my butchering of I Corinthians.}

My dog loves me. My cats and chickens are affectionate and I enjoy having them around.

But my chickens don't even love their own chicks after four months. How could they love me?
