I just cannot believe this: Saturday evening I found my favorite Silkie, of course, sitting by the coop and there was a large amount of congealed blood on lower back and top of tale area. She did not appear in any pain.
Brought her and washed her off and the bleeding seemed to stop. I discovered a huge lump of white-flesh colored mass with feather follicles protruding all around it. It was semi-firm but I didn't want to push too hard. It was raised about 1.5 mm. I put Ventamycin on it and have done so ever 8 hours. There were no neurological symptoms. She acted as though nothing had happened.
I have no idea when this could have occurred. Nothing could have gotten her. I
picked her up several times in the day and there was nothing there! I looked all over for anything or structure that could have caused this. Nothing. It just came up, literally out of the blue.

Today, Monday AM, it has started to bleed again. She has managed to reach around herself and pick at the outer edges, making it look worse. I actually think it could be a little bigger today but
I can't tell because of the bleeding. She is eating and drinking and all systems seem to be working and she acts completely normal. It does seem larger and is raised about 2 mm, or so.

I have no vet (can you believe that?)in my area or within a 55-mile range and I am considered rural! I suspect a tumor or growth of some sort. Or, do you think she got bit by something? It is warm enough and snakes are coming out. I just can't figure out how it got like this in only a few hours! I am fairly certain this will end up having a very bad outcome. I am asking because I want to know what this could be and what or if, I could have done earlier to prevent. I mean, how would I even know

Been raising my chickens for over a year and have seen and handled a lot! (I learn almost everything here). I will add this to my book of knowledge.

I appreciate all of you who take time to educate the many of us who have little or no experience! I hope to be one of the "helpers" as my confidence a knowledge in increase with time.

Thank you to anyone who can help.

The pictures are of the wound and it is on top of the lower back above the tail. It sticks up about 2-2.5- mm
Before I post, I just looked at her and it has definitely gotten bigger. She still acts like nothing wrong!

Could the mass have been there under her feathers, and she or another chicken started to peck on it? If it is not an injury, then it could be a feather cyst or possibly a cancer, possibly caused by a virus. The 2 most common viral-causing cancers are from leukosis and Mareks disease. It would be good to see a picture the next time you clean the wound. I would use the Vetericyn, chlorhexidene, or saline, and then apply plain Neosporin ointment to the area twice a day.

I know this is a very stupid question, could a superworm have done this or two? I throw them to the chickens at night and have seen one land in their feathers. I always remove but what if I didn't catch this? they sure can chomp on my fingers. I know this sounds ridiculous, especially if you saw her now. It isn't looking too good for her. It has gotten quite large and she is now hurting. I can only hang for another hour or so. She is happy at this moment because she has a supply of worms in front of her.
