DOG ALLERGIC TO EVERYTHING-meds making him vomit:( UPDATE 11/5/11

I have a cat that's allergic to most cat foods. I feed her Blue Wilderness grain FREE cat food, dry or canned. I would try out some of the completely grain free higher quality types, like Wellness CORE or Blue Wilderness. Also, if it is a grass or other seasonal outside allergy, you can try bathing more frequently. My parents' last dog ad seasonal allergies and washing him with my handmade cold process (NOT glycerin) soap really helped his itchy rashiness quite a bit.

Hank, our heeler is allergic to wheat, corn & soy. I had him on Solid Gold dog food for only a few days before I saw dramatic improvements. I have since switched to another lamb & rice blend and he does great. He was running a fever, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, etc before we got the issue figured out.

Has the vet checked his thyroid level? My Great Dane was having a hard time with ear infections and itchy patches on his skin. The vet didn't check him at first because he was not overweight. After about a year of treating him for ear infections, he did a blood test and found that my love bug had hypothyroid disease. He has been on medication for about five years and the ear infections have stopped. I do have him on OTC allergy medicine as his feet swell this time of year. I didn't read every post so I apologize if someone already mentioned the thyroid. It is difficult going through this with your pets. I am sorry that you are having this problem. I have never had a Cocker but my brother in law had one and it too had all sorts of skin problems. I remember for a while he was having to poach fish for the poor dog.

Hopefully, you will get to the bottom of the issue soon. Good luck.

Terri

PLEASE go to www.aunaturelk9s.com and look up the yeast protocol. You really need to get this dog off dog food and onto a raw diet, no grains, no starches, no veggies. ALL dog foods have binders, which are starches and will feed the yeats. I can darn near guarantee this dog has a massive systemoc yeast infection. All the meds are just suppressing his body, not fixing the problem. That's why he keeps being sick. Its like plugging the nose of a person with a cold. No more runny nose, but they are still sick and its going to come out somewhere else.

I know the raw and natural approach seems foreign and a little frightening, but in these cases, its the only thing I've seen work.

If you want to pm me, I can send you some more info and I would even be happy to talk to you on the phone to help you understand and be comfortable with it.

I just hate seeing dogs miserable when it can be fixed.

I hear you. I took a half day off this week to go to take him to an eye dr. His regular vet noticed that his pupils were a different size and had me thinking the poor guy had a tumor. By the time I got him to the eye dr, three days later, both eyes were normal. He thought it could be a reaction to what I cleaned his ears out with. It is always something. I did read more posts and saw that others were suggesting yogurt. I give Seamus yogurt with each meal. I split a 6 oz. Chobani plain between his breakfast and dinner. He loves it and it seems to have settled his stomach. He is currently taking antibiotics for a UTI and normally it would bother him but he is OK this time. I also feed him Holistic Select Lamb and Rice. It used to be called Eagle Pack and was a single protein source food. Wellness bought Eagle Pack. Even though the formula changed a bit, he can tolerate it. Keep us informed on how he is doing.

OMG how I do fill for you.

Oh,and for your poor dog too. I hope you find a quick solution that doesn't break the bank.

I think members have given a lot of good info.

I appreciated the dog food analysis site. Now I'm going to be looking for a different food for my old Shih Tzu.

I don't know if Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) would be of any benefit. It has natural antihistamine properties.

I forget which post mentioned the prescription drug company but on the first page they mention ascorbic acid on the right. When you click on it it will mention side effects one of which is diarrhea. In very large quantities some ppl use it as a flush to help get rid of toxins. Of course you would not be using large quantities for your dog if you choose to use it at all.It does tell how much to give though.

I realize that you are probably reluctant to try anything new for fear of the consequences. I am just making mention of this in case you wanted to try it. If you do get the non-acidic form.

I wish you best of luck.

We have a 12 yo shepherd/ chow mix who has the exact same problem. If it gets too bad she will get sick and throw up, and that might be
part of your dog's problem rather than the meds. It is a reaction to a severe yeast infection.

OUR vet told us that her liver is not functioning as well since she is older and it is unable to effectively filter out toxins. Here's what he suggested:

A supplement called Livaplex (takes twice a day; seems to help_

A supplement called Canine Omega 3 oil (we sprinkle on her food)

Purina Sensitive Systems dogfood; it is fish based and engineered for dogs with allergy problems. She likes it a lot

She gets Cortisone injections occasionally but we hate to do that if we can possibly avoid it.

We have to be really diligent about fleas. We try to be.

The normal treatment for chronic ear problems. Important to keep up though.

We have some stuff called Bitter Apple spray for dogs with skin conditions. Tried it for the first time today and it worked REALLY well.

I have read that spraying Organic Apple cider vinegar on the dog, and putting a few drops in their drinking water, works too, but
we haven't had much luck with that.

It's a real problem. Our dog ended up in the ER with a serious yeast infection last year though b/c we were not able to control her
allergies. Found these other remedies since then.

Hope some of these things help your dog!
