I don't expect a Vet to be a Nutritionist per sey. I DO expect for them to have the new and basic reliable information on nutrition. Sorta like I expect my family doctor to know what my diet should look like based on what she knows of me. Its not a specailty I am asking for, but so many Vets just don't know enough. Food is a huge part of any animals life, they shoud know what good quality looks like and be able to point people in the right direction. Soy, corn, wheat are just not quality ingredients.

That's what I did...kind of "upgraded" from Purina One to Diamond Naturals. So far so good...I'd like to find the beef, but can't, so I'm using the chicken and rice formula for now...

I can speak from experience on this one! I haven't read the replies...but I actually went to vet school (Kansas State University College of Vet Med) for a year (I had A's and B's...I just hated school too much to go back) and I took the ONE hour ONE semester long course on nutrtition that veterinarians get...and it is sponsored by Science Diet (the text book is made by Hill's...). Science Diet, Purina, and Iams/Eukanuba also give vet students extremely cheap/free food...so that is why many vets will recommend those foods...unless they've done research themselves, which most haven't, all they know is what they learned in that one hour, one semester course sponsored by Science Diet. So, PLEASE don't always trust any old vet on nutrition...

I showed my parents this, and they agreed to not switch foods!

I am going to start doing more chores, and instead of giving me the money, they are going to buy the food. Now, I have been thinking about this. Cats are not supposed to eat any grains, but dogs need a small amount, right? So the cats should eat a grain free food, like TOTW, and the dogs should eat something with some high quality grains. Does Blue Buffalo have some grains in their food or not? So, am I right about this, or am I totally mistaken? Anyways thank you!

Dogs do NOT need grains in any way shape or form....but they tolerate them much better than cats do. There's really no such thing as "good" grains for dogs....just less bad than corn, wheat, and soy...

I get the cheap Southern States brand dog food in the red back (costs about 13.99 a 40# bag - cheapest is brown bag which is 11.99) This I feed just under 1 cup summer 1.5 cups winter - and its used primarily as a 'stomach filler' and as a provider of the grains and excessive carbs they really need in winter. They get raw eggs (old trick I picked up from my great uncle - bred border collies - best looking coats on them dogs and that was his secret he swore by), raw meat, scraps, boiled veggies/anything I give to my chickens and ducks the dogs get a portion of it - usually half boiled and roughly chopped in the blender - mix with a raw egg and a some chopped meat (i get scrap meats - about 15 lbs of scrap/clerance meat for 5$ from local small store that cuts its own meats - and the owner is my 'adopted older brother'

never hurts to know folks) - my dogs are healthy and in great shape - they have lovely shiny coats, good teeth, and no extreme foul breath/poo. I noticed a huge difference when I started adding in veggies and raw meat to their diets - has been wonderful.

I have a question though. Is Diamond Naturals better than Premium edge? It is made by diamond also.
