Dog at work problem

Most small businesses don't have anything like this. If you have a complaint, you go to your boss. If your boss is the problem, you can put up with it, quit or try to find a way to get around it which is what he's doing here.

Sad and annoying issue. I'd get pretty impatient, especially if the dog is impeding my work. Too bad it isn't food service, at least then you could report it.

Still, OSHA isn't just for big business. If your health or safety is threatened, they probably would do something. You should be protected from retaliation as well.

How badly do you like working there?

Where I worked, HR was the wife of the person I had the problem with. She thought he walked on water.

I was wondering the same thing.

I feel sorry for the dog. If she does bite someone and the owner is sued, things will go badly for her.

Thank you for being kind to her, even though it isn't your job.

I never said to spray it... I said the dog could probably smell it well enough to keep away without that.

I don't understand.. do you not have an HR rep? OSHA?

I really would NOT be training someone else's dog. I'd rather call animal control. I doubt the dog is having fun sitting in an office all day.
Small businesses typically do not have an HR department. If you need an HR rep it usually means you're out the door. As I said this place is family owned and run. I am the only true employee which means I'm the only person who can be replaced. Luckily I'm very good at what I do so they put up with me

I LOVE it there. They treat me like I'm a genius and God sent. The owner even said when I started there that "God sent them a gift". I would not quit over this dog

I am so sorry you are in this situation. I am glad you love your job though.
I worked for another small business before this one and they treated me very poorly. It was to the point that when they told me they were closing up shop for good that I went home and celebrated. Here though I'm treated with the respect that I deserve. I dont even mind my boss's selfish tendencies because I get so much praise and appreciation every day. Its just that dog that was a minor annoyance and now a major one.

If they value you that much, don't you have some way to talk to someone there about the dog?

I am glad you enjoy your job. That is always a big plus to any job.
I suppose but its kinda complicated. You see the grandparents are getting on in their years. The grandpa has dementia and Alzheimer's and the grandma is 87. Rumor is my boss will inherit the shop from them. He casually hints to me things that imply it will be him and I running the whole thing. I think ultimately he wants to have me be a business partner. That would be freaking awesome so I dont want to ruin my chances at that opportunity by complaining about his dog.

That makes sense. In that case, if you can tame/train the dog, it makes you even more valuable.

Dogs are like little kids, in that they need to be taught what is acceptable behavior. If you like the dog, it might be worth your time to help it to be better behaved.

HOWEVER. Unless you have anything in writing, there is no guarantee of him making you his partner. Where I used to work, the owner had implied that certain people were going to take the business over when he retired, my husband among them. That never happened. All of the people he implied that to eventually left. I don't want to rain on your parade, just say that "hints" are no guarantee of what will happen. Been there, saw that.
