DOG ATE CHICKEN WING OFF... PICS and SHE LIVES!

i love fluffy! what a great rooster! he looks so tender and proud of all his babies. fertile too. what a man. i'm starting a fan club.

glad stumpy seems like she's through the worst. thanks for putting up pictures! *sigh* so sweet.

There's a thread somewhere about hens that start acting roo-ish if there are no roosters around... are you absolutely sure Fluffy is a he?

Do you have any other roos that could be fertilizing eggs? Either way, I guess Fluffy really is gender confused.

I am VERY certain that Fluffy is a boy...he covers all my females, and FIGHTS my neighbor's big gold roo who stalks the fence line and chases his tail (and is approximately three times larger than Fluffy) .

Ha chases off all the little young cockerels off from anywhere near "his" ladies...he is DEFINATELY a roo. He wakes us up crowing, and has the best, proudest crow of all the roosters in the neighborhood (though, I might be a little biased).

You can't even tell he is a bantam by his crow...which all the rest of my bantam roos sound like they are sitting in a tin can and sucking helium (which is hilarious, except at four am).

I did have a hen who started acting kinda agressive, and her wattles and comb got pretty red. I put her into my next size up pen (I move em by age) which had four roos in it (six-10 weeks old) and she calmed down very nicely, her comb/wattle reddening even went away.

Either way, Fluffy is one-of-a-kind, and made me fall in love with cochins, the little pants-wearing bowling balls of fluff!

I have a one-winged chicken. She was attacked by something when she was just a chick, but it didn't pull her wing off. Instead, her wing got infected and maggot infested (yep - very nasty) and I had it amputated. I paid the vet 100 x what I paid for her, but she made it and is quite spunky and a good layer.

She is lowest of the pecking order and quite mouthy, but is doing fine. Jumps around and can get up on the highest roosts with the other chickens.

Here's a link to the thread detailing my ordeal:

Good luck and just make sure she stays inside and away from flies.

Thanks for the encouragement!

My darling has been a great house guest since she was turned into a chew toy.

Funny thing..that same pup was just in my yard, SLEEPING with my ducks!

Oy, never a dull moment!!

If you want excitement, live on a farm!!

City life could NEVER compare! Every day is a life or death struggle for animals, birds, vegetables, and people!

Well, less of the people thing. Sometimes.

UPDATE AGAIN.

She is getting picky about her eating. She will only eat her special probiotic grains/greens/yogurt/milk/oyster shell mixture. Also, her water is best drank with apple cider vinegar....not electrolytes/vitamins.

Now she has her own little cage to set in, no competition or anything, in my hatching room with my eggs and seramas, music playing softly, a steady temp, and the soft peeping of my mini cuties.

Its a dadgum chicken day spa!

Twice a day sponge bathing and dressing, gourmet meals, fancy mixed drinks all day, and entertainment (my seramas are clowns!, and they're all in see through rubbermaid containers so she can watch them when she chooses.)

No infection signs, and she is pooping HUGE gobs of junk...looks like my goose's poop, for crying out loud! It's almost big enough to get her ready for eggs!

One of my 11 day old Welsummer chicks got its wing chewed off by one of our dogs three days ago. We have the chicks in a cage in our sunroom with our dogs and a cat. The animals cannot get into the cage but we had a little box sitting in the cage for the chicks to get into and apparently one of the chicks must have gotten wedged between the box and the wire of the cage. My two Doxie-poodle mix dogs are fascinated with the chicks but we did not think they could ge to them. I guess the chick's wing must have been sticking through the cage wire and one of the dogs got ahold of her and chewed off most of her right wing. I was horrified...a small bone was still attached but was not going to be functional, so we had to clip it off. We tried to bandage it but the stump was too small; a bandaid didnt work either because she kept reaching around, trying to peck it off and her beak kept getting stuck in the tape. Without any covering to protect it, the other chicks kept trying to peck it. So we took her out and cleaned it gently, sprayed s little antiseptic/antiseptic spray on it to numb it before painting it with a bit of liquid bandage and covering in a thin layer of antibiotic ointment. I made her up a special little drink to help support her healing- I mixed chick electrolyte powder into water and then added a small amount of powder33ed peanut butter (it was the only thing I could think of to give her a protein boost), a couple of drops of vitamin E oil, and some crushed up baby aspirin. I dipped her beak in the drink several times and she drank it. I wrapped her in a soft cloth and held her because she seemed shocky. We separated her in her own little cage next to her "sisters" but away from them so they couldn't peck her, with some wood chips and a heat lamp, chick feed, and water. We gave her a bit of time to recover and I got her out a couple of times and gave her more of her high protein drink. The stump looked dry and clean the following day and she was walking around pretty much like normal, eating and drinking. We've been giving her freshly prepared protein drink and monitoring the wound, but still keeping her warm and separated from the others in a cage right next to them so she can hear them and sense their presence. (We did line the cages with cardboard so no more risk of another body part getting through the cage wire where the dogs could get to them). I have high hopes that the little girl is going to recover just fine. She will be short a wing, of course, but she seems to be doing just fine, as if it never happened. We'll continue to nurse her back to health with fresh applications of the liquid bandage until the wing has completely healed then slowly introduce her back with her "sisters" and watch that they don't peck her. I feel so bad about this happening- I feel responsible for not protecting her better and feel so bad for her and for the pain she must have felt (she doesn't seem to be in any discomfort now, I hope). My hope is of course that she will recover (which does appear more and more likely) and I believe she will be able to adapt since she seems to be able to balance well. We did consider putting her out of her misery when it first happened, but wanted to give her a chance if she did not seem to be suffering too much. I hope we are doing the best for her. I am attaching a picture of her...the goop is the antibiotic ointment over the liquid bandage painted on the stump.
