Dog attack :( Does and don'ts and life expectation?

I went out there just now to check on the hen again, and the flies were terrible out there! I decided to put some fly spray mixture on paper towels around her cage and it seems to have driven most of them away, although a few remain. It seems like they mostly are keeping away form the worst of her wounds, since her feathers cover most of the areas.

It's just bug spray made of skin so soft, water, and I believe rubbing alcohol? I've never made it myself but my mom has always used it and it's what my horseback riding trainer makes for the horses. So I know it'd probably work, which it mostly has.

But my question is, is the smell going to bother her? I didn't put it too strongly around her, and it's on paper towels so I can always remove them. I did spray a little on the towel covering her cage as well, but it's mostly on the paper towels.

Any other ways to keep the flies off her?

I am no expert by any means when it comes to ducks but I had dogs kill all of my fowl except for 1 drake. He was in shock and had wounds as well as a broken wing. Thankfully his wounds weren't that bad but he did have a broken wing that I was not able to totally get to recover because he kept getting out of the animal tape I had in him and I turned to this forum and they gave GREAT advice!!!! He would not eat ANYTHING but he was drinking so I was told to get Nutridrench from TSC and add it to his water and I truly believe that's what kept him alive!!! He is domesticated but not used to being handled so I tried to keep his stress level at a minimum. Best of luck to you!!!

I'm so sorry to hear about your flock, I'm glad your drake survived though. I haven't seen her eat or drink yet but I am leaving water and food in there. I'm trying to limit action around her and I'm already interfering more than I planned because the flies are just awful right now. I may try to see if she's willing to drink later. If she is, I could always see if amazon carries nutridrench or if the feedstore near us is open and has it, or I'll wait and see if she is willing to eat soon. The first day or two I'm not stressing as much but if she continues to not eat anything I'll see what I can do.

And thank you!

I went back out there and the flies are still covering two of her wounds. I'm going to check on her in another couple of minutes, I did tuck a paper towel next to her just because I am at a loss at what to do and I don't want those flies on her. She doesn't seem to care anyways.

Any traps I can make or something else to get rid of the flies or improve the situation? Or am I doing good...?

The flies worry me, I am afraid of them laying eggs in the wound and her ending up with flystrike, maggots in her flesh. That would be devastating. Can you check her carefully to see that isn't happening and put her someplace where the flies can't get to her? I know you don't want to bother her but you really must protect her from the flies.

They worry me too, I can check her for that, I was just out there a moment ago but I can go back out.

We can potentially keep her in our garage, although I'm unsure if my parents want that or not. I can ask my mom though.

The other thing I was wondering was if there was some sort of ointment, or something I might have on hand that I can put around the wound (not on) to help with flies as well. I did a quick google search and I saw two separate, old BYC threads saying they used swat ointment on chickens, but I was unsure if that or anything else would be a good choice or if I should leave it alone.

Going to look at her now and ask about keeping her in the garage. At the very least, I may be allowed to keep her there until we get something like I mentioned above, if that is even recommended.

I'm sorry for constantly posting on this thread, but I have just been so stressed over these flies.

In the end, she did get maggots. I just came in from trying to pick out as many as I could with tweezers, and then we used peroxide diluted with water over the wound. I have no idea if we got them all or if that'll work, but soon I'll put more vetercyn on her.

We are looking into getting something to put around the wounds to deter flies...right now she is in a dog crate away from the original site and I put more fly spray-ed towels around her. I'm about to go check on her to be sure the flies are keeping away.

I'd love ANY help about the maggots and if she's gonna make it thru okay, or if they have already done their damage...Or if I need to clean her wound out more. Also any input about the spray/ointment around the wounds would be greatly appreciated.

I feel just awful letting this happen, and I'm terrified it's going to really harm her or set her back...

Thanks so much for all the well-wishes and help so far.

Maggots are going to be a real problem you really need to keep her inside to keep that from happening also plucking or clipping the feathers back from the wounds will help you remover any maggots that may hatch I’m thinking egg have already been laid. There is a product called swat that you can put around the wounds to help.

Thank you for the reply, what can I do about the eggs, if anything? I will probably try to clip back some feathers and do one last clean before the day is over I'm thinking.

Most frustratingly, I can't keep her in our garage so the best I can do is keep her in a dog crate by the door instead. So far a few flies have been buzzing around but I think she's good and they haven't found her yet.

What is CB? I heard about the swat product and I was considering using it but my mom was looking at a spray since she didn't know if the ointment would be easier for poor Miss Duck to eat. Would either work?
