If she does not digest well and you have difficult to feed her meds, you may want to consider tube feeding. It's surprisingly easy! Just make sure you stretch her neck before you feed her. Here's a great article:I was giving her meds and she aspirates. I hear gurgling. Help! Been a couple of hours. She is eating still.
Update-Doc is putting her clavamox. Said to stop the Vaseline, triple antibiotic ointment, stop the Vetericyn. Said to stop the monistat. He said to continue the Metacam. The bigger issue right now is that her crop is not emptying and with that, she can't take in medicine. No medicine-everything goes downhill. Said to offer only her normal food unless this evening she has not eaten still...then syringe a formula. Doesn't see any puncture wounds. Recommends to keep cleaning it with chlorhexidine. ADVICE still appreciated. He recommends giving her until Friday and seeing if improved. If not, euthanize.
Thank you. I don't have anyone to help though unfortunatelyI currently have a hen who went through surgery and isn't emptying her crop properly.
She is on Metoclopramide. Maybe ask your vet if he can add that or another prokinetic drug to the treatment?
Also, I've read that your hen aspirated some meds accidentally. I don't really know how to solve the aspiration once it occured, it usually self-resolves if it isn't too much liquid, but it is still something to be avoided.
What works for me is having someone hold a flashlight on top of the chicken so I can where her trachea is when I open their beak.
It is a ring in the middle of the throat, and you have to make sure to put the syringe on one of the sides, avoiding the ring completely.
He mentioned a prokinetic but then the tech told me he wanted to wait and see first. I'm so anxious right now, knowing I could lose her at any moment.I currently have a hen who went through surgery and isn't emptying her crop properly.
