Dog Attack! Help!!! *PICS* Great news!!!!

If you have a baby aspirin- you may dissolve it in a cup of water add a bit of sugar or honey-for energy and taste.
If you can flush it with dilute warm betadine that would also help. Cover with a big gob of triple anti b and wrap the area loosely and offer her refuge in a warm quiet place.
So sorry this happened:(

But we still love our dogs. And I hope the girl makes it and the dog learns to leave alone.

Thank You all for the responses!

She is making little noises now and is sitting quietly. I do not have the money to take her to the vet so i will do what ever it takes here at home to try to get her better. I will post pictures of her all cleaned up in a bit.

I am mad at the dog, but at the same time he is a DOG....So the flapping jumping feathery thing caught his attention and he couldn't resist. Of course this poor girl has to suffer for it. He will NOT be left alone out with them ever again. My other 2 have never messed with them.

I can't tell from the pics if those are long tears or if they are deep punctures. If it's just a deep puncture, then clean with Betadine and stuff with Neosporin. You can also spray with Furall (bought at feed store). It's a yellow spray that is an antibacterial and keeps off flies - especially if you put her back outside.

If they are tears of more than a quarter inch long - I personally would stitch. I know what they say about dog wounds but that's more about deep puncture wounds and not inches of gaping open flesh. Besides, let me add my disclaimer (and experience) - this is my own opinion and what I have done.

Clean with Betadine, then stitch her up, then apply Neosporin and/or spray with Furall. Give Penicillin injections for a few days to ward off infection.

I had a duck that got ripped open by my large GSD puppy (at least that's who I think it was but can't prove it) - no puncture wounds that I could see but two long gashes in neck and whole belly area open and exposed. DH didn't think the duck could recover - today, a few weeks later, I don't know which duck it was.

I also had a chicken that got ripped up much worse than yours, by a gang of roosters (using their beaks) - she was fighting them and came out the worse. I sewed her up from back of comb to top of shoulder blades.

I find they are amazingly calm about these surgical procedures and I've performed many others on them and they heal really well. Put a towel over her face so she can't see and she should be calm. I never have anyone to help me hold them and they just sit or lay still for me.

Hope this helps - feel free to PM if you have any questions.

How is she doing now? You might want to use a saline solution to wash out her wounds, and then apply the neosporin ointment after.

Saline Solution

1 cup tap water

1/4 to 1/2 tsp table salt or kosher salt

a pinch of baking soda

Make a fresh batch after 24 hours.

Good luck with her, I would do what I could - you never know til you try!

ok ..here are the new pictures.

This first one is after I rinsed her off with some warm water.

Here she is after her bath and neosporin. I sprayed some hydrocorizone on in case it itched..it had a topical pain reliever in it too. i made her some asprin water, but she wasn't too interested.

I seem to remember someone - may have been Speckled Hen - who had some problems with putting Neosporin with pain reliever on her chicken. I think it could possibly be toxic. You may want to check with her.

Your chicken is a lovely girl, and I hope she's feeling better soon. Don't feel guilty!

If she isn't bleeding much at all, do try to dribble the aspirin water ever so slowly along her beak line (so she swallows on her own). The pain relief will give her some will to fight. I've even taken some yummy fruit like watermelon or cantelope (whatever they like the most) and bathed in aspirin water and then fed that. It get s alittle aspirin water into them.

Vets have told me to mix 9 parts water with one part betadine for cleansing and not to use the stuff undiluted.

Depending upon how deep the wounds, she may need oral or injectable antibiotics in addition to betadine.

I don't know if the spray you used is okay for them - I wouldn't use more unless you are sure or get confirmation from someone experienced with it.

Keeping her comfortable and in a stress free environment right now is crucial. If she is comforted by your comforting her with your words, do that a lot!

You can give Rescue Remedy for stress relief.

It is important that she stay hydrated.

Hoping for healing. They really can rejuvenate amazingly with lots of TLC and the right care.

I am so sorry!

We had a dog (old neighbors) tear into our leghorn. She was only 5 months when it happened. I though she was a goner for sure. I watered down some apple cider viniger....squirted a little on the wound...and she healed up in about 2 weeks.

I almost had "put her out of her misery". It was bad! Breastbone showing and all...half a breast gone, neck torn, feathers missing, and blood everywhere.

Now she is 8 months old and you can't tell her apart from the other leghorns. She is more wary of dogs tho....lol

I just let nature take it course and was totally prepared to find a dead chicken one morning. I left her in with the ladies and got lucky no one picked her. They actually huddled together for a long while after she was hurt.
