Dog attack *very graphic*

The vet doesn't know jack without seeing the hen, no way! Keep up with the pennecillin shots. If she is eating/drinking and acting happy I bet she makes a full recovery. Keep the wounds clean and KEEP HER INSIDE in a dark quiet area until she is healed up. If at all possible to soak the infected areas in a weak betadine solution at least once a day and apply the neosporin on top of the penn shots she sure has a fighting chance. I think if her intestine was injured she would be on her way out already. Best of luck to you and a pat on the back for rescuing her, I woulda done the same thing

Keep us updated on her progress.

That is what I was thinking! Leaving her outside will increase her chances of infection just simply by her being able to dust bathe!

The green part is bruising. As Chickenaddict mentioned clen the would with dilute betadine and cover it with neosporin (if it has pain killer make sure it doesn't have one of the 'caine meds like benzocaine or lidocaine as they are toxic to chickens). I agree with the Penicillin shot! Looking at the image, I don't see where you intestine would be perforated.

Here is a thread I had posted a couple years ago. Hope it helps. I have been through the same issue a few times.

However, none have been lost that had a fighting chance. I have also used 1/3 pill of 250 mg Cephalexin (or Amoxicillin) 3X's a day for 10 days (most vet supplies carry these).

I have been cleaning with a betadine solution and putting neosporin on it twice a day. I also stopped the oral antibiotic in her water and started electrolites. When I put her outside she is in a small crate that actually has many holes for air circulation. She's not running around. She can't really walk. None of the vets around here will let a chicken into their office. I'm not sure if its because of the potential to spread disease or if they just don't want to deal with them. The vet I talked to gave me the penicillin free of charge so I appreciate that. It's been 6 days and she has improved so I am hopeful she will survive. My friend will be taking her back if she does. The smell just made her and her husband gag and she couldn't handle cleaning the wounds.

I just discovererd you can buy 250 mg amoxicillin (I found capsules) from stores that sell fish. They put it in the tank to treat fish. My local feed store carries it. Just wanted to give you another source. Thanks for looking after this poor hen.

Wow, that's amazing!! Glad she's feeling better. I have a hen that tore the outer part of her toe nail off and she still hasn't started laying again!! LOL You have one tough little chicken there!
