Dog Attack!!!

A pit bull is probably one of the very best dogs you could get. Bred to be a farm/protector dog and misused and abused by guess who? I don't think you can find a more loyal dog anywhere. Just find the right breeder.

Well, any person who takes a dog out in public with no collar/leash is a downright idiot, sorry. I rarely use such strong words, but hey, it is what it is.

The neighbors around here know we have no trouble dropping a dog in its tracks if it's coming after our chickens so they deserve whatever happens if they are irresponsible enough to allow them to roam. The breed is irrelevant. Even a lab can bite if a stranger grabs at it. Let's not get into another pitbull discussion.

Glad your well dressed BO is doing so well! That is a really clever idea to keep her wound clean.
I would imagine any dog owned by this person would have behaved in the same manner.

I want to be clear that I mentioned the dog was a pit mix only to paint a picture. I agree the dog could have been any breed.

Today, Buffy is a bit more sedate. She laid an egg yesterday, poor thing!

I have found it is easier just to say some mixed, medium breed dog. Considering the majority of people can't tell you the difference from a Scotts American Bulldog, a Dogo Argentino, and a pit bull. Not to mention the heated fights that arise. Being the owner of two pits, neither of whom have ever laid a mouth or paw on my flock of chickens, although they always free range within killing range, I have to say who ever wants to claim the pit bull as some killing dog knowing nothing else,

That being said, under the ownership of an irresponsible owner even a chihuahua can do damage to a flock, and I've seen the proof. The fact it might have been a pit mix is nothing to go hooting and hollering about. But the fact only one was hurt is something to be thankful over. Thank god it didn't kill any of them, and that poor chicken. I hope she feels better soon.

Thanks so much for all the good wishes. She had a little outside time today in the courtyard, so she could see her flock and they could see her. Next time, a playdate with her sister BO. Don't want her to lose her place in the flock, plus...she's bored!

You HATE pit bulls? That is about the most ignorant statement I have heard in a while. She said it was a "pit mix". You are assuming she is correct. And what if it was a pit/husky mix? Do you HATE huskies? I can tell you as a retired animal control officer of 20 years that the Northern breeds (gawd rest their souls) and herding breeds like aussies are THE WORST livestock killers on the planet. So you HATE them?

Of course the owner had nothing to do with it. But, I suspect strongly that if the owner had been black, you would HATE blacks, since you judge ALL individuals by the actions of a few. This is a dog owner who is obviously quite stupid. Rides with window down when he knows he can't control his dog. Owns a dog which is aggressive to humans in inappropriate situations. I don't know about you - but if I was going to HATE anybody, it would be the dog OWNER.

Almost any dog with more than a 7 cells attached to its brainstem will chase chickens. Most will be so aroused they will not come when called. Do you HATE all those dogs? On another forum one of the posters lost almost all his chickens recently to a mix breed border collie. I wonder if he HATES all collie type dogs now? I guess he should, huh? Since one dog acted like a dog because the owners didn't control it, he might as well HATE all dogs that resemble it. Makes sense.

The "witch hunt" mentality lives. Blame the animal not the owner. Blame all dogs that even resemble a dog which has frightened you. HATE something that you are afraid of, don't understand and can't appreciate. And be sure not to mention the owners who allow the dogs to get into trouble...

Seriously? You HATE Pete the pup? I'm sorry that at some point you were so terribly traumatized and frightened by a dog who may have resembled a "pit bull" that you now HATE ALL "pit bulls". What a desolate life you lead.
