Glad she is doing well. Pitbulls / Pitbull mixes get a bad rap for being mean. I beg to differ. They have to be the dumbest breed of dogs that I have ever seen. My neighbor has one and it is the lovingest dog, but is dumb as a stump. He won't listen, won't come when called and so forth. He has chased my chickens once until my dominant hen turned and flogged him really good. He doesn't do it any more. I am by no means taking up for the dog as I would have dropped him with one shot. The problem that you had was your girls are free ranging, and on someone elses property at the time. That would have been a shot that was hard to justify. Just glad that your girl is doing well. Could have ended up much worse.

I couldn't agree more that the ending could have been much sadder.

We don't even own a gun, so that wouldn't have happened in this case. I am a little concerned that my neighbour put herself between Buffy and the dog to protect her. I'm going to have to scold her for that! I mean, it's great that my neighbours love my chickens on their properties, but there's a limit!

I agree. That was a very bad call on behalf of your neighbor. You never get in between any dog and something they are after. That could have also ended up much worse than it did.

I'm glad your hen is doing well. My husband caught a possum with one of my SLW last fall. He brained it with shovel. The hen was alive. He wanted to cull her right away because he didn't think she'd make it through the night. She had three deep gashes in the thigh and back. Not only did she survive, but all her feathers grew back and she started laying again!

Thank you, ThaiChick; that gives me hope! Buffy had a playdate with two of her flock today. They shared a treat. I want to keep her in their memory...

How ironic. My "Chicken little" bantam hen, rescued from dogs by my daughter, was half skinned alive by them, amazingly survived.
The dogs that attacked her were two medium size mutts. Ny daughter couldn't keep this little hen, because she has 5 dogs, and her Choc Lab, 2 LabXchowX??? and her peke-a-poo all wanted to finish the job the others started, obviously not safe for this chicken...
The irony? My daughter's year old pit bull was GAURDING and protecting this chicken! She would even just stand or sit by watching it "lovingly" when my daughter and the kids would have this hen out to clean its cage, in the house, even the kids sit on the floor with the chicken, and that pit bill never acted at all like she'd hurt it! They'd have to keep the other dogs out of the house and far from even the cage, they'd try to get the chicken, but not the pit bull!
Goes to show you, you just can't generalize!
(Except maybe stupid people that shouldn't own animals!)

It doesn't seem anyone was generalizing.

it's not that they are dumb. they just don't listen very good.
