Had a predator rip a big gash in the breast of one of my girls. The other chickens did not peck at her, so I let her stay with the flock. She completely healed up without harassment from the others. Took about 3 weeks. about 5 for the feathers to come back in. You cannot tell she was even wounded. I first thought she would never make it but she came through it just fine. They do have remarkable healing abilities.
This happened yesterday afternoon, and I had the exact same thought: I'll feel better when she's made it through a night. She is chipper today, and impatient to get out of the crate! She's had topical and oral antibiotics, eaten, drunk water, and pooped. She's wearing the cutest little dog dress (cut up) to keep her from the wound. I darn near slept by the crate though...
Does this look like a chicken with a deep 6" gash in her back? They're amazing creatures...
my buff orpington was taken by wht i guess was a hawk. all that is left is feathers. she was a pet and i miss her dearly and love her so much. i didnt know if i should look for her or not. i thought what if i find her and she is almost dead with no hope. now i wish i would have.
Glad your chickens were okay!! I have a really bad neighbor who got mad at us for reporting his big mean dogs wandering where they shouldn't be, so he let his dogs out into my yard and they killed all four of my gorgeous Pekin ducks..![]()

If one of my neighbors did that, he would not have to worry about feeding his dogs that evening. I would have shot them on the spot and called him to inform him that he needed to get his deceased dogs out of my yard.
