The pest in this instance is the chicken. I just thought I would post this here so everybody would know that once in a while the chickens win.

My AmStaffs know to leave the chickens alone. They will go out with them but there has never been much interaction UNTIL Ana the Orloff decided to start following our AmStaff Maggie around and nipping at her toes, tail, ears, and finally, got her smack on the nose!

This has been going on for days.

Maggie has gotten to where she will tuck her tail and come stand by me so I can defend her from Ana. Finally Ana follwed her right up to my legs and Maggie turned around and gave her a really hard stare and just barely curled a lip. Ana stood about 6 inches from her nose for about a minute to let her know that she was in no way intimidated and then turned and strutted away.

Since that moment there hasn't been any more inter-species unpleasantness, but Maggie will still stear well clear of Ana if she is out. Now that is a bold chicken!

One of our ee hens follows our mini aussie around whenever she goes in the yard. Many times if the dog goes doo, then hen will run up and peck her hairs on the front of her back legs. (kind of on the outside of her thighs, no where near the pooing region) I'm not sure, but I think the chicken is mad when the dog is pooping on her grass!

Needless to say, our dogs are pretty cowed by the hens. It all is about the attitude!

My cat loves hunting and birds lol but he's mostly a mouse kinda dude

Anyway when we first got our red hens, as chicks they were all perched on the side of the brooder and Accio went in, stood up with his paws against the brooder top and looked one right in the face and..........

She pecked him right in the head

LOL that was the last time he bothered the chickens, he's terrified of them.

My barn cats are terrified of the chickens too.

My quail attacks my Pit Bull's face...that dog is so pitiful! The quail loves to dive at her nose as she's passing by and when he does, this 90 lb bull dog shakes like a little chihuahua! It's hillarious!

Brindle grump, with the slight curl of lip Ana was saying she isn't going to take anymore. I don't blame her. She is NOT as afraid of the chickens as it seems. She is holding back because she knows(senses?) she isn't supposed to hurt them. Of course this is very stressful to her. If they keep it up, it will eventually get to a point where she WILL fight them off. Then everyone will be saying "another rotten pit bull." If they start up after her again I would use a water sprayer and let them have it in the face to persuade them to amuse themselves in a safer fashiion. Coming to you, she thought she'd get that protection instead of having to defend herself.

Drumstick Diva nailed it on the nose. I owned a pit bull once and I can tell you that they are not afraid of bears, much less a foolish (and up to now, lucky) chicken. Eventually, she could snap and just bite the hen in two in about half of a second. So instead of being amused (and it is amusing) just carry a squirt gun with ammonia water in it and squirt her in the face each time she tries it.

Do not mistake fear from conflict and anxiety over going against your wishes and following her instinct. Mine would ignore my daughter's dog which snapped at him and even would nip his side. Twice tho he grabbed her by the throat and shook her so violently that she looked like a 2 ounce rag doll instead of a 40 lb dog. She ran and hid behind a sofa , Ki-yiking repeatedly. What did she expect? Eventually my good old good-natured dopey pit bull had enough of her nonsense.
