Be realistic. Do you really think there are people just standing around the shelter waiting to "fix" your trainwreck of a dog? Shelters are over crowded, understaffed and a very depressing place to work. Never mind having to deal with idiots that think you are going to find the dog they are dumping a great home on a farm with room to run....LOL. Waiting period? Why? Cage space is prime real estate. They are usually full with all the strays that people have dumped and have to be held onto for the owner to claim for several days before they can be euthed. This is not uncommon to take an owner surrender right back to the euth room...not at all.
The reality of it all is that people need to wake up to the responsibility of pet ownership before they acquire a pet. They are not disposable....in other words, if you screw up and leave a puppy like this loose for 9 hours while you are away and it destroys your house, it's your fault! This woman took on a very' high energy hunting dog as a pet and her knucklehead daughter should have though about what she was doing. Another good reason to not give pets as gifts.
THis poor dog never had a chance. Doomed from day #1.

Sorry, but sadly there right...

Gang raped? Well, we were not there but not all dogs were gang raped.

Well, your mother probably had to make do what she thought it was best at the time. And probably spaying was expensive back in those days. Rancher, don't worry about the word "classic", its not a good word

We believe in grating dogs if you are going to be away for a length of time and use common sense when you use the crates for your dogs. People have to be educated about using the crates, how often and how long. After you get home, let the dog out and let him do his business and PLAY with your dogs.

I had a Borzoi that had HORRIBLE separation anxiety, I mean horrible! He tore the walls, the floor and even when he was crated, he broke his canine teeth and bent the door. Mind you, I got it from a breeder up near Chicago and it was not even a week I had him. Poor dog was a huge mess too, literally crapped all over himself, the floor and I didn't appreciate coming home from work, dealing with the mess. And he was not trained. All because of the breeder's lying to me about this dog. I thought he would have been a perfect fit for me but no, I returned back to the breeder within ten days and wash my hands of him. Now did you know what happened to the dog? The breeder put the dog down! She KNEW the dog was problematic but she didn't tell me. I felt sorry for the dog but it was NOT my fault for taking in the dog which I thought he was housebroke, well trained on leash and commands and would not chase my cat. FAIL is the word for that breeder. I am glad that the breeder went out of business in the following year, she had TOO many Borzois in her backyard in the city, barking dogs all the time, not enough room to run.

Classic. Because people tend to blame the issues they have on the pet that they were lazy in training or not paying any attention to. "The dog would go after people and we didn't have a fence"....So, it's the dog's fault? I don't get it. The mother dog was always pregnant? Gee...why do you think? If she couldn't be spayed, so be it....but for crying out loud, bring her in and confine her! The owner of this lab is a CLASSIC example of blaming the poor dog that died. Instead of crating the dog and having a person come to let it out mid-day as a pup, she left it loose in her house. CLASSIC example of someone not doing what they should do keep both their house and their dog safe. CLASSIC stupidity IMHO. Again, people ASSume their dog is going to be adopted to a person who will change everything for their dog and it will go on to lead a wonderful life once they sign those papers at the HS. Chances are, that dog will be euthed right away or worse, sold to a class B dealer to go to research. They love labs and beagles. But, they say ignorance is bliss....too bad this fool found out the hard way when she decided to go back in the doors of that HS. I'm glad this made the news so more people will be aware and hopefully have their rose colored glasses shattered.

Honestly, it's pretty common in a LOT of shelters for owner surrenders to be euthanized immediately, esp if you are in an area with a stray dog problem. There is a mandatory holding period for stray dogs, in case their owner is looking for them. Simple math - your shelter has 10 cages. You have 12 stray dogs and 5 owner surrenders. You can't put down the strays until the time is up, so who do you think gets the needle? So, which dog goes first? The dog with no known problems are the large untrained lab with a history of destroying furniture and drywall?

The problem all comes back to irresponsible owners. It's not like animal shelters have a huge employee base that just sits around waiting for the chance to kill dogs. Most are staffed by volunteers who get involved to help the dogs.
