I am currently treating a hen with a very serious wound along her entire back and under her wing. My dachshund attacked her and pulled nearly all of her skin off the area and left a large puncture wound. I was able to see alot of muscle. I squirted regular water over the wound to clean it and then sprayed Vetarycin heavily. I also placed a clean bandage, wraped it loosely with an Ace bandage and brought her in the house. I took her to the Vet the next morning. I could tell that infection had already kicked in as my family could smell it from 4 ft away! The vet didn't know what to do it was SO bad of an injury. She gave me Baytril, an antibiotic, and told me to continue spraying the wound with Vetarycin but not to clean it out any longer. Miraculously, the hen is still alive and doing OK. She has trouble walking too many steps but I think she may have a broken bone in her upper thigh or pelvis. Today I gently pulled off a very thick scab from the area and sprayed again with Vetarycin (the gel type). No bandage but I did buy a chicken saddle to keep the wound covered as she has been back in her pen for the past 2 days. You can buy the Vetarycin at the Farm store but it is expensive...about $40 per bottle. I really think it is why the hen is doing so well. GOOD LUCK!!!!
