Dog Licensing

Here there is no license laws, nor is there leash laws. We live in a very isolated, rural area.
Both our dogs and both of our cats get their rabies vaccinations yearly so that information is on record at our vet's office. The dogs are also microchipped.

It's required here. And you do get fined if they catch you without it - they check.
It's only $8 or something though for a year.

I always get one for my dog although I'm sometimes late in getting it.

I tried to look up to see if I need one since I'm getting a puppy next month. I can't find any information except for only NYC requiring it. I live in Northern NY near Canada. Is there a site I can go to and see if I need to license mine?

It used to be easy to get around the license law here but about 2 years ago they started making ALL Vets report the rabies shot records to the town the person lives in, and the town can and does enforce the licensing laws.

Example, we were fostering a Pug for Pug Rescue, told the Vet this, but since she was technically in my name in my city they told the city about her, less than 72 hours from the Vet visit, I got a call from the city animal control "reminding" me to buy her tag, I told them she wasnt ours but a foster and they replied, well she had the vaccine and is being housed in the city, she MUST have a tag. So I had to pay 20 out of my pocket to buy her tag!

All of our own dogs are tagged, and they dont require them for cats here in the city but in the county they do!

Thanks for the reminder, i should license my pup....

Here licenses are issued by the township/city/village. THey are cheap for a fixed dog, ($5) I think $10 for an intact animal.

It's not enforced in the manner that they drive around checking dogs, but if your dog runs and the humane society or cops pick it up you will pay the $150 fine if it is not licensed.

I am in rural S. Wisconsin for the record, and i would hazard to say maybe 30% of rural dogs around here are licensed.

I have my dog microchipped.

ditto.

animal control has been here (coz I called them about the neighbor's dog tearing up trash in my front yard) and they never said a word about my dog.

I have a paper from the vet certifying the date of his Rabies shot, that's all I really need. Neither of my dogs is inclined to run at all so they never even try to escape, and the gate stays locked when I'm not standing right there, so nobody could let them out.

Why pay the city an extra "license fee"???? Our dogcatcher has yet to catch a dog that I called them on, or even give a ticket to the trash-strewing-pup that used to live next door......
