Pretty much everything I know about border collies and herding is from reading Nop`s Trials by Donald McCaig. Great story and lots of info about how border collies work. He mentioned something about brace? (it`s been ages so I may misremember the term) dogs that learn the opposite command so when their partner goes to one side of the flock they go to the other. Will your new dog be learning that way?
Was very bummed out this year when watching the Pennsylvania Farm Show on cable and they showed the sheep dog trial (second year they`ve had it there) because there was a kelpie entered and they cut away from coverage of that event just when the kelpie was about to come in.
Back to topic I have also read and heard that one-syllable names are the norm for the reason BoyTheRooster mentioned.
