When the roommate moved out and left me with 3 chickens I had no idea what to do, but figured if we were going to keep them we needed to keep them safe. We had a finished shed in our backyard we were using as storage and I figured that would make a perfect coop, but it's in my backyard where my dogs go out to play. I had to make something safe and healthy for the birds but also where they would be unseen, in plain site, from the dogs. The building is 7x12 and the run is 6x12.
First I was worried that the dogs would try to dig under the fence. It wouldn't take much room to grab a hold of a chicken and pull, so we dug holes and put rail road ties under the fence line:
Word to the wise: Don't move all the rr ties 1/2 way one day and expect to be able to move them the rest the next. My arms gave out and the husband had to get creative:
Once that was in we put the chain link fence panels on top and attached corigated metal to the outside. Chickens can't see dogs, dogs can't see chickens!
We made the nesting boxes in sets of 3 to hang on the wall:
We made a few designs for the perches but this is the only one that worked. We still need to make more and taller ones:
We have a window on one side with both a regular screen, a metal screen and then I have chicken wire over the window frame so the chickens wouldn't sit in the window and taunt the dogs:
All in all it was pretty easy, it stay very clean with the Sand, I don't think i'd ever agree to having chickens without sand bedding anymore. It may not be as creative as some of the others but it keeps the chickens safe!
