Herding cats
this has nothing really to do with the quoteOur oldest Golden Denver will bite if someone invades. This is the only time she barks or growls. Like some kids were walking on the road coming to our house one night well i was taking her out then returnedlater after this happened and as soon as we walked out they ran off. Yes i had her off leash but she doesnt leave our yard ever without a leash on. She ran up to the road, started barking and scared the kids off. She usually loves kids, but i know she can sense when people arent good. She will stand her guard to protect me or my family. And this is the only aggression i allow.

I wonder where the line is with whats protection behaviour and whats just aggression

I think there isnāt one type of protection behaviour in dogs. I think there is territorial and actual protection
Twiggy barks, growls and puffs up at people around our house, she does this to everyone she doesnāt know. I would call her territorial since I donāt think she will actually protect me, I think she protect her territory, her cats and her sheep
Fanta has never shown any aggressive behaviour, unless it was to a object when she was younger

then there are reactive and aggressive dogs that I donāt think can properly be protective since I think they are thinking of themselves and not of helping others. They might bite someone in front of you but I think if they where safely away they wouldnāt ran to help you. since they feel like they are in danger they canāt think about the situation rationally, while a protective dog that isnāt reactive can be a lot more rational and wonāt over react or run away
I would really like to know exactly how personal and police protection dogs temperaments are chosen
