Do you teach engagement and leash skills with reward before punishment?I believe what I said was misinterpreted. I donāt ONLY punish bad behavior, I praise as well for good behavior, my adult dogs donāt like treatsā¦simple as that, they wonāt do anything for treats unless weāre in the house and itās raw deer meat, anywhere else with any other type of treatā¦nope, couldnāt care less (but they do live for praise) Aspen will take treats anywhere and listen to anything, she has a will to please like no other puppy/dog Iāve ever seen. Once sheās in training mode, nothing can distract her, sheās got a laser focus and thatās something I love abt her, she rarely does anything wrong because sheās just so dang smart![]()
this is a good way of teaching leash walking with out treats, I have seen many different versions including using treats and rewards as well. It is basically using the environment, moving forwards and sniffing as the rewardI know many wont agree that this works but it does. It worked on the strongest most stubborn saint benard ive ever met. Walking a 200lbs saint benard thats pulling you is no fun.
When the dog starts pulling turn the other direction until it stops. And continue.
I have also seen many different versions of this as well. I personally have found a different way of teaching leash pressure worked better for my dogs but each dog also needed it to be changed slightly differentlyAnother way is to train your dog to come back when the leash tightens.
Basically start by throwing a treat on the ground far enough away that the leash just tightens up, wait till they eat the treat and then keep tightening the leash till they come back. I used a clicker to teach this to Tucker.
This we do. Or I should say did. Now all he requires is a slight pause on my behalf and he walks at my pace again. And as said before we did the ground work with treats at homethis is a good way of teaching leash walking with out treats, I have seen many different versions including using treats and rewards as well. It is basically using the environment, moving forwards and sniffing as the reward
I found it didnāt work well enough to only do that to teach leash walking but when out walking itās useful to do something like this so they arenāt rewarded for pulling
OMGShe once did pull me over, she was so upset she yelpedand then she tried to trample me

If I give a cue and they learn it w/o me using punishment, yes. If they insist on pulling and taking me off my feet, no they will be punished and then rewarded as soon as they engage in good behavior againDo you teach engagement and leash skills with reward before punishment?
I am sorry this is not making any sense to meIf I give a cue and they learn it w/o me using punishment, yes. If they insist on pulling and taking me off my feet, no they will be punished and then rewarded as soon as they engage in good behavior again
If they listen to my cue to heel, obey it, and heel, obviously Iām not going to punish them for doing exactly what I want, theyāll get praise and a treat IF theyāll take it. If I stand still and they insist on pulling I will sharply turn in the other direction and continue on my way, if the dog engages and turns with me, great! If they donāt pay attention, theyāll get a little snap on the leash because they didnāt follow the turn. I keep my hand in a fixed position at all times, I donāt yank or pull the leash back, my momentum is what pulls them in the opposite direction.I am sorry this is not making any sense to mewhat do you mean by if they learn it with out punishment?
