Dog thread!🐾

Ill read through them later today hopefully!
Now i use e collars but i went through sessions on how to use them. And i dont just shock them. I redirect them then use the nick option which is more like a vibration.
I thought e-collars did some type of vibration/tensing muscles not a painful shock? though it still is aversive. Unfortunately none of the research seems to go in to detail of what a e-collar does

I honestly think a lot of research is biased too not necessarily intentionally but if they haven’t trained with it, they don’t really know. Or even if they have, I’ve found a lot of them base the research off of the bad trainers that just zap dogs on 100 and not the ones that use them properly then claim they’re terrified and the tool is horrible. Same goes for the other side though. Thinking positive trainers are all cookies and no rules.

Anyway, Brewster LOVES his because it means we get to go somewhere fun like the marsh or a hike. He comes running over as fast as he can. He’s not scared at all. Now, granted, I rarely even hit any buttons anymore but still. Even when I did, he wasn’t scared at all. And the one I have they claim is blunted stimulation like a tens machine. He did have a cheap one that I think was hurting so I immediately got rid of that one when I realized and found a higher quality, gentler one. Mostly though I use the vibration. Even if I need to use the stim, it’s a very low level. I can’t even feel it (I’ve tried it on myself). I think it’s like 8 out of 100 some levels.

If you read the research they aren’t very biased, none of them so far have said it’s extremely cruel or even cruel at all. reward based trainers do have rules, I could say a lot about this subject but I don’t want to start any arguments

Ah okay, I only read the titles and some of them seemed to lean a little but admittedly I didn’t read the whole thing.

and I know they have rules. I didn’t say they didn’t. I was saying the other side often thinks that they don’t

So relaxed lol

ooops sorry! I most have miss read your post šŸ˜… all the titles are that way because the point if the studies is to see if there is any welfare issue with aversive training methods

the conclusion they seem to come to is there aren’t enough studies to come to a a strong conclusions. aversive trained dogs do seem to show more stress signs then none (in and out training), play less and interact less with people. they also can’t find a reason to use aversive methods so reward based training is probably better

one study also showed aversive trained dogs interacted less with the environment and sniffed less

for me personally this is enough that at least I think aversive tools and methods should only be used by trainers that have a degree in dog behaviour/psychology/etc but that is my personal opinion

I don’t mind people having a polite discussion about the different training methods but I think the discussion rarely stay nice. I also think there is a lot of misinformation going around

one last thing is it shouldn’t be a argument at all that e-collars are a aversive tool, whether good or bad they wouldn’t work unless they where aversive

Denver and Tucker get so happy when they see theirs as its either a super long walk, a ride, or to go somewhere new
