Agreed. And I don’t feel weird honestly because some vets just aren’t up to date on the latest information and new studies, etc. They maybe went to school a long time ago and don’t continue their education.

My vet still says 6 months. It works for us, but we don't generally have male dogs. I get mine spayed at 6-7 months and never had a problem. When I used to let them go through a heat I lost the one to mammary cancer at 6. I refuse to let that happen ever again.

And that’s not knocking vets btw. I love vets and the work they do. Mine is FANTASTIC. But some are just more… old school? I guess. Which isn’t necessarily bad for certain things but can be for others lol

That’s good it works for you! Your dogs are also a lot of smaller dogs though, right? I feel like for the larger breeds and especially males it’s more important

Old school vets don't mean bad vets either, just saying

Honestly, if you're ever concerned ask your vet to explain their reasoning and make you're own choice. It's your dog, you're the one paying for it, it's your choice.

I know, that’s why I said it wasn’t necessarily bad. LOL

My own vet I would classify as old school too but he’s great.

And that’s exactly what I did except I didn’t ask why. Just decided to wait. And they never questioned it or hounded me about it or anything thankfully. LOL

A much loved dog owned by an ex Vet nurse. I get the feeling he should be fine.
Where I live and where I work I honestly can't think of a time a big deal has been made of the whole big dog/age thing. Like I get it and understand but I'd never even heard of it till I was around dog owners on the internet. I've heard about it in person maybe like once or twice since?

I feel weird saying something different from a vet but 9 months is way way too young

I thought it was really young too, so at the time I went and looked up and read a good amount of stuff on it and the consensus was that it was pretty much fine.
But ofc I just searched the SAME inquiry again and the results are entirely different?? (Same browser, etc, wtheck?)
Finding the recommendation for large breeds to just be "when they stop growing" and for both his breeds it's between 1-2 years old. Was also reading about the repercussions of early neutering (which I tried to dig into before but had a hard time finding anything, but of course now that info is extremely available and I'm finding more at a glance than I did spending an hour trying to follow rabbit holes , what?).
I guess I'll talk to my husband about it and see what he thinks. The winters here aren't too consistent from day to day, at least, so if he needs to spend more time outside than he might otherwise, we will have plenty of safe opportunities to put him out. And he loves the snow (which always melts within a couple of hours, haha).
