Thatās funnyI thought it was really young too, so at the time I went and looked up and read a good amount of stuff on it and the consensus was that it was pretty much fine.

Finding the recommendation for large breeds to just be "when they stop growing" and for both his breeds it's between 1-2 years old. Was also reading about the repercussions of early neutering (which I tried to dig into before but had a hard time finding anything, but of course now that info is extremely available and I'm finding more at a glance than I did spending an hour trying to follow rabbit holes, what?).
I guess I'll talk to my husband about it and see what he thinks. The winters here aren't too consistent from day to day, at least, so if he needs to spend more time outside than he might otherwise, we will have plenty of safe opportunities to put him out. And he loves the snow (which always melts within a couple of hours, haha).

Rosie was 70 pounds. Spayed at 6 months and lived a long healthy life. Most of mine are smaller now. Even one heat can cause pyometra which is a deadly emergency, and some don't make it. I just don't want to worry, plus no way I want to raise an accidental litter, or put one of my dogs through that.

Oh yeah, I definitely wouldn't use it as a "solution" to anything. It's just something that needs to happen eventually and I know it can somewhat change their demeanor (though I wouldn't bank on it or hold him to some silly calm standard, lolol) so it's all *ahhh* about juggling when to do things so it all fits together, but since hubby is fine with it it's all good! So yay! Was under the impression that he had stronger opinions on it, but he isn't opposed at all.that sounds good! He has a trickle treating toy that I can fill with dry treats, and slather with something soft on the outside. He also has a freezer thing that I can fill with things like pumpkin and strawberries with water for a hot day, and he's gotta work at it for a while. I would love to get him something even more engaging though.
I'm not saying it's not wise to consider or not true or anything but I like to take everything with a grain of salt

That makes sense! Just another thing to add, I also think that neutering them keeps them from developing mentally. And I find it interesting because Iāve heard from hunting dog trainers (two different ones on different occasions) that they donāt accept neutered dogs to their program because they believe they donāt have the mental capacity to do the work. Again, this could fall into people over dramatizing things but I still find it interesting.
Yeah that sound tough. I personally hunting for their food is more mentally stimulating than lick mats. More work on your part but I think itās worth it. Scattering food around really gets them to use their noses. But some argue that this can cause training issues with them being more focused on the ground that you or thinking they can just eat anything they find. I think that having a clear routine/command avoids these issues though.Speaking of occupying him, I keep thinking he'd love lick mats, but the ones I find are all soft silicone and I kind of expect he would shred them.
