Dog training thread

@ShrekDawg if Brew decides to charge after ANYTHING, give him all the slack in the line and you charge the opposite direction. Keep a tight grip on the end of the leash. BUT don't do this if he only has his regular flat collar on! He could slip out of it and then he would be loose. You need a training collar of some kind (NOT a harness!) and at least a 6-foot leash. NOT a retractable leash. I do mean CHARGE the opposite diection, he really needs to feel it when he runs out of slack. You won't hurt him but you might startle him. Then gather up the slack and be ready to do it again.

Do this EVERY TIME he goes charging after anything. If you do it right and consistently, after about three times he will STOP charging! He will see a distraction and turn his eyes upon YOU to see where you are going. HE will walk politely beside you, working to keep that line slack! So do some left and right turns and some about-face turns, to keep him interested in YOU.

He will walk so politely, right next to you, on a slack line, that people will ask you where you had him trained.
Good advice. I’d suggest a plastic pinch or prong

I prefer a good metal prong. I don't like the plastic ones. A properly fitted metal one won't hurt your dog if it's used properly. Give the dog slack - HE won't pull on it. Usually I see people pulling up on them and holding taut. This is WRONG. But even a slip-chain ("choke") collar can harm if handled this way.

And a medium-toothed prong is plenty big for any dog. The ones with ginormous teeth are less effective because with medium links you get "more pinch to the inch." The effect should be like a dog bite. Of course on a small dog you want the small prongs. This collar is humane and natural when used properly. Dogs do not communicate with each other by strangulation, as with a choke. They communicate with a bite, whch is what the prong feels like.

Take a few teeth out and put it around your arm so it fits snugly. Then give it a sharp yank. It can only close so far, not enough to harm, but it does get your attention.

I love this. I’m always happy to see people who actually understand what a prong is.

Thank you! I like them on my Shelties bc they won't break the coat. Sammy sleeps in one at night, on my lap. Without it, he runs outside every 20 mnutes barkng his * fool head off waking DH and making me mad. With it, he sleeps beween my knees all night and never says a word.

Even Jenny sleeps with one on now. I tied her up for 3 nights. Then she chewed the leash off. But she still sleeps beside me AS IF she is tied, lol. No more sneaking outside to bark at coyotes. And - she comes to me and asks me to put it on her!
