Dog training thread

So while kind of one the subject I have mixed feelings about something. When I get my Doberman I’m not letting anyone touch him for a while. But when do I draw the line of making sure he is really good at ignoring people but wouldn’t get freaked out if someone did randomly pet him? I wouldn’t think it would be that big of a deal. I plan on having him in very crowded situations often just no petting so I don’t think it would be a problem right?
I'd look up how they socialize service dogs. Since they learn to ignore people but still be ok with them
Ahhh yeah you need do not pet. BIG LETTERS
Clearly

It's okay to say, "I prefer you not pet my dog."

I don't handle other people's dogs. We're discussing this in another thread. I would no more pet someone else's dog than I would handle their kid. I think it's unnecessary and disrespectful - to the dog. I've had people thank me, and I've had people ask me if I'm afraid of their dog. I'm not. I just think it's rude.

I've found that just open carrying a muzzle generally deters people from trying to pet my dog . I don't want to contribute to the stigma against muzzles, but sometimes I just can't handle interacting with people, so that just makes them think twice.
Yup I’m doing that to. Chase will be muzzled anytime I am in crowds. It’s a perfect deterrent and I don’t trust him around a lot of people

Note: he is not aggressive and doesn't try to eat random stuff off the ground, I just muzzle trained him just in case he were to ever need to wear one, and it's a good people deterrent

I usually just say "No sorry she's working/training." If I really don't want someone to pet her

Plus it's nice because if someone were to claim that your dog bit or attacked them, you could easily prove their claims to be false because your dog was muzzled

I was walkung a Rottie at night one time. A shady-looking character on the other side of the street called across to me: Does your dog bite? Mongo was just a big puppy and would no more bite someone than he would sprout wings and fly, but I hollered back: Only when I tell him to. The guy nodded and kept walking.
