Dog training thread

Honestly I was so close to saying "excuse me please stop petting my dog" but the lady looked mean and I didn't feel like having a whole confrontation today lol
Yeah I get it. When I think about the ideal situation I envision myself being a jerk and saying don’t touch my dog. But I can’t😭

Hello!
This is my dog, his name is Apollo

He’s a little over three months old now and responds to the commands sit, down, crate, bed, and he’s house trained and comes when called.
I’ve been making sure to expose him to my small chickens as much as possible as the end goal is predator protection.

I was wondering if anyone had tips for leash training because it’s really important to me that he’s good on a leash especially being a large dog breed.

That’s amazing for couch a young puppy! Good job! For loose leash walking I like starting inside and teaching what you want them to do then gradually go to more distracting environments.

Thank you!
The last dog we had was a super wild aggressive dangerous Great White Pyrenees
my mom got him at a bad time and didn’t have the time to or just didn’t prioritize training him so I’ve tried to be very intentional about behavioral and obedience training with Apollo now that it’s my responsibility.

I 100% get you. I have had extremely unpleasant dogs in the past. You are doing great and you should stick around here!😊

That's great progress for such a young one!

For on leash, do you have any specific concerns? Like does he pull or does he not want to move on leash? Generally I teach Heeling and loose leash walking by luring into the heel position and always giving lots of praise when they are there and when they look at me. Teach him and by you is the best place to be. I reward for eye contact, especially when they offer it without asking. Make sure that your doing some training around distractions and socializing him too

I’ve done a little bit of walking him on a leash like down the road and he’ll generally stick by me but he’ll start pulling forward and I just kinda…keep the leash short so he’s forced to stay by my side

He's pretty young to do actual corrections right now in my opinion, but it's not good for there to be constant pressure on his neck. So what I'd do is change directions when he does that, and lure him back to position. Reward in position. Work on getting him into position at a stand still, then take a few steps, if he stays in position praise praise praise. Repeat that, a few more steps. Take your time and praise big time when he stays by you. If he pulls then you need to go back to fewer steps. The main idea is that when he stays by you =the best, happiest, most wonderful place to be. Work on his focus too, it'll be helpful for everything

I just want to rant 🫠
So today we went to tsc, I just needed to return an item and get one thing so I didn't vest her but that's besides the point. She was doing great, sitting by me, ignoring other people/dogs, and not sniffing things. The lady behind the counter asked if she could have a treat which I said yes since she's doing good, I wanted to see how she'd behave. She sat nicely for the treat and pets. Then a child asked to pet her, she sat perfect and calm for it. Keep in mind here, a young CHILD knew to ask first. So as I go shopping and Willow is sitting while I read ingredients on stuff this lady on the phone decided to stand by me, willow was a little interested so I told her leave it which she did. This lady just starts rubbing her head while talking on the phone no regard for me. I loudly Said "leave it!" And moved away a step. Willow did. The lady looked back at me like I was rude and then CONTINUED to put her hand out to pet her. I said it again and finally she left. She never said a word to me in the entire interaction 🤦‍♀️ willow handled it well though.

On another happy note, after that another person asked to pet and she sat for pets nicely again, and she waited in line very patiently even with people very close to her on all sides.

TL;DR=Willow did great, people have no respect

If you don't want to confront, simply Heel your dog away. The offender may or may not take the hint, but you will feel better because you have taken control of the situation.
