If you don't want to confront, simply Heel your dog away. The offender may or may not take the hint, but you will feel better because you have taken control of the situation.

Yeah I do like that. Kind of a training bonus too. Teaches the dog to pay more attention to you when it’s getting petted.

I have mixed feelings some people seem to genuinely not understand and others just don’t care. I’d like to be a big jerk to the latter.

How do you feel about politely saying, "I prefer strangers not pet my dog"?

I guess I think people that do this do it out of ignorance, not malice. They think they are flattering you by showing an attraction to your dog.

I definitely agree with the second part. A lot of people don’t know. Yeah maybe I am being a jerk

I'd like to say something because it's educating people a but to not just pet dogs. But sometimes I just don't feel like talking to people
