Dog training thread

Yeah, I'm keen to take him on a short, slow plod while I throw the ball for my other dog. She loves to swim as well and it's a beaut day out.

How did things go for your dog - did it get worse?It's been over a year since his last vet visit; he's had weak hind legs since the beginning and I've spent loads of time building them up. he's not as bad today after the two injections yesterday. The vet gave him Meloxicam 1.5 and I'm thinking of getting him a Balto brace. I don't want the cost of a surgery, nor am I up for all the aftercare that would be required.

It was pretty on and off from what I remember. She was an extremely fast dog, and would go outside running top speed everywhere just for fun. She only lived to six, because someone actually left a towel inside of her when she was spayed as a pup, and it caused non-cancerous tumors to grow in her abdomen. One and a half months from the first symptoms to when we had to put her down, it was a miserable couple of months for all of us. But, from what I remember, it she wasn't limping nearly as much in the last year or two, just very occasionally. It's like it'd partly heal, then get injured again, over and over, and it just slowly improved and got more resilient (I'm sure it left some sort of permanent damage however). The original injury happened, I think, before she was 1.

My other dog is the wild one ..she outruns any dog if there's a ball in play, and I've made sure from early on that she mostlyruns from my sidein a straight line to the ball. Sudden directional changes (at speed) are not good for dog limbs.

Yes, she was a good girl and very loved. My dad grew up with a lot of dogs, and said she was the best one he'd had. She got buried in a nice spot in the back of the property.

Huh, I wouldn't be surprised if Teyla's (that dog) injury was worsened by sharp turns. She'd always try to go after rabbits, but never caught one once she was adult sized. My family's current dog catches them on almost a daily basis, there's no stopping her. It's definitely reduced the cottontail population!

I have a Golden and she is a hoot. She'd been coming in all slimy like she rolled in something but we couldn't figure out what it was. It would dry stiff and sticky but had no odor. I thought, is it egg? But where would she get it? And, there's no yolk? Then my GC saw her coming out of the hen house with an egg in her mouth! Apparently she'd eat the yolk then roll in the white! So I fortified the hen house so she can't get in there now. The day after I did that, she came to me, not just slimy, but STINKY! She had rolled in a fresh cow patty! Uuuggghĥ!

Haven't updated, sorry! On Sunday we went out for lunch and it was dog friendly so willow came. Lots of pets, no jumping she sat the entire pet duration. She was good, laying down and quiet at the table for a good 20 minutes....then started the bored barks. She stayed laying down but every 10 or so seconds a bark or 2. Obviously annoying even at pet friendly spaces. I took her out for walk and potty but she continued when I came back. Wasn't interested in a bone either.

Today we did some training in the backyard. She was great. Then we went to the goat pen, I dud a little training in there and was very surprised how well she did even with the goats running and bleating. Recall even. We have some platforms and ramps for the goats to climb on and I had willow jump up on them. They can be a little bit wobbly(not to an unsafe point) but she was great and confident as always.
