Dog won't stay off couch

Wow everyone. Thanks for some great responses.

I try and keep Jake clean and he generally smells ok but he is a guys dog, not a lap pooch with a bow.

He gets a bath once a season or so. Plus his area outside where he spends a few hours a day is dirty and muddy. He likes to dig and play king of the mountain on mounds of dirt. He likes dust baths too. He may have picked that up from the chickens.

On dominance I am the alpha. When I walk in he knows to lay on his bed until I tell him to come to me, at which point he goes a little nuts and does the doggy happy dance. I'm a dog whisperer fan and a quick "psst" will make him immediately come to attention (unless he got off his leash but that is a discussion for another day).

On contradicting myself I understand people's opinions on that. I do allow him on the bed with me and that can confuse him. He was also allowed on the couch when he was younger making this situation worse.

I'm trying to break the couch thing before buying a new couch. He didn't go on it today so maybe he is getting the idea.

Finally, for those suggesting I shower with him, my shower is too small. He likes to take baths with me instead, and NO, I'm not taking pictures.

great. I look forward to more mousetrap advice.

Forgive me but are you being sarcastic? I could take that post two different ways?

Yeah, must be sarcasm. I reviewed some of her other posts.

You never know. Some people get worked up over these dog posts.

I'll be the first to admit I would be one of them but this thread is an exception.

I'm sure your pooch will learn to stay off of the couch. If he doesn't go with the cheap carpet runner idea unless he has some pretty tough pads on his paws.

We used to have a kid come into my buddies Sunoco station and reach up to grab a pack of cigarettes. He thought he was entitled since his dad had us service all hi delivery vehicles. One day I put a mousetrap in front of the Marlboro Light 100's. I caught a rat. What a great thing that was.

I think the runner idea will be my next thing although Jake won't go up if anything is on the couch, even laundry. There was no dog fur in it when I came home tonight.
