Take the dog to the animal shelter and let them know the dog killed your chicken. That way if the owner claims the dog hopefully he/she will know the dog is a problem animal.

In some states, if you document the kill, you can press charges against the owner. However, don't be surprised if suddenly the owner claims, 'that's not my dog. Looks a lot like it, though."

So sorry you had to watch your pet get killed in front of you.

I read somewhere on here someone said that if you have a gun and know how to use it, do so. I don't know where you live, but around these parts, a person has a right to defend his property and everything on it. Farmer agreed...he just didn't get to the dog in time. I'm a dog (animal) lover, and not sure if I could do it, but I would do anything I had to do to protect my animals...all of them.

I went down to that farm, very neighborly like, and told of my plans to raise chickens, and gave him calm, fair warning. I have not had any trouble with the dog as yet.

I agree with an earlier post about if/when the dog is claimed and asking for compensation for your loss, but it's the "if" part that troubles me. How long are willing to have the dog tethered to your property and take the chance of having one (or more) of your chicken wonder too close to it? Not to mention, having to give it at least basic care.

I don't like to see any animal be mistreated in any way, and had it just been wondering around and no danger, I would do what I could to find his home first. But if it had killed one of my babies, it would have been at the pound already. It was there before and you didn't mention (unless I missed it) if it killed then. But it came back and DID kill this time....Again, JMO, But I vote pound.

I'm really sorry about your chicken that's awful one of my neighbors terriers has been getting into my garden too so I can only let my girls out whn I'm out with them. I would take it to the pound too. Obviously the owner is irresponsible to let the dog off his/her property and like someone said already if it would have been a child it would already be dead.

we found where it lived. It is a hunting breed with lots of energy. It has been kept in a kennel, no wonder it bolted! The owner didn't even notice it was gone. it shys away every time you reach for it. Doesn't seem to be treated right

Awwwww....I'm so sorry. That is very sad. Maybe take the dog to a shelter. She may have a microchip so the owners can be found. I am so so sorry for your loss.
