Doggie tonail broken.

Have you ever had a really bad hang nail past the quick? It didn’t start feeling better until you cut it off. I can’t see how the toenail looks. Only you can decide that. As someone who has shown multi Best in Show dogs I wouldn’t just leave a hanging nail piece. It is irritating. Any irritation on a dog’s paw can cause licking. That licking can become a habit and then you have to deal with a lick granuloma.
It is a toe nail not an artery.
Yes they can seem to bleed a lot.
A styptic powder or corn starch will help.
You can wait if you wish. It can prolong discomfort since any piece will snag.
If uncomfortable call your vet. If you have a good relationship they will have the vet tech snip it off for a few dollars if you call ahead and explain. It isn’t something that needs an office visit.

I am in 100 % agreement with this. One instant of pain and bleeding as opposed to long term irritation and pain ? I clip the broken toe nail.

Ok out took me a few days, partially due to wanting to try letting it resolve itself, then to needing another set of hands to hold Butters still, and of course because I was just plain...ahem...Chicken. Yesterday I snipped off the nail, spread corn starch all over everything (couch carpet, my hair, my clothes, doggie foot, half the doggie leg) :cool:along with a good bit of blood. Held her still till it looked like it stopped bleeding. Applied sterile gauze with tape covering all the gauze to keep out dirt. She didn't bother it for about 10 hours, then I caught her chewing it off. :tongueLooking at it now the white quick is exposedwith a very tiny bit of nail on top, not so much at the bottom. She licks it but I try to stop her. She still favors it but not quite so much. She seems more comfortable. I don't think i will bandage it again, seems useless. I will continue to monitor for infection.:fl Thank you all for your suggestions and advice. :hugs Interestingly enough, I think now I could bravely manage nail trimming on my own instead of paying the vet!:celebrate

Glad it worked out! In the future I recommend doing it outside if possible (I do it on my covered porch, and hose off any blood/cornstarch). I pack on cornstarch until it looks pretty well dried up, then if possible temporarily confine the dog in a smaller room like a bathroom or side bedroom so it's not running all over the house.

As you noted it's hard to keep a toe bandaged. Instead I pull an old sock loosely over the foot and use vet tape at the top to hold it in place - if the dog needs to go outside you can tape a plastic baggie over that and just remove it when you're inside. I only keep it covered maybe 12 hours, by that point bleeding shouldn't be an issue any more.

Obviously keep an eye out for infection, swelling, continued discomfort, etc.
