Dogs and cats - Why is it ok for cats to kill things for fun?

Yes, I think you have a point here. Some people in the city have no idea how the circle of life works. They see their cat kill a bird and all they see is this cute little bird being eaten by their cat. They dont think of how that bird is feeding the cat.

why would you lock the cats up?? Thats what they do, they hunt. Why do some people think a cat killing a wild bird is cruel? Its nature!

They are NOT native to this area, and are killing native wildlife.....the cat is one reason some flightless birds are NOW EXISTED.

No cats should not be allowed free range, if the owner can't feed them, they don't need them. Just like no dog should have the freedom to kill all the wildlife either.

Some people are of the mind that if it's natural, then you shouldn't stop it. Tigers and leopards hunt and kill humans, it's natural, but I wouldn't let it happen just because it's natural. Cats, even feral ones, were brought here and encouraged to reproduce in high numbers by people.

Think I will get a pet Lion, its just natural to kill dogs. Wonder if I could free range it ,only different its prey will be larger.

Here is a better idea:

Are we all able to "agree to disagree"? Not everything needs to turn into a mouthy contest. Let's try to keep this thread from getting messy

In the end, any animal/owner should be held responsable for any livestock badgering or harming. No matter the animal whether it is a dog, cat, or donkey ect

deerman, your same arguement could be used for people who hunt, fish, ect.

Hunting and fishing, there are laws and limits to make sure the number are not reduced , plus money from hunting and fishing fees ,are used to help all nature.

I agree all pets and etc. or should say there owners should be held responsable. For them killing any. Point of this thread so many think its just the dogs..........not CATS.

Myself I think a free roaming dog killing chicken...or a free roaming cat killing baby rabbit.....is the same.....and I will kill either for the killing.

To answer the question posed by the topic, it is NOT ok for a cat to kill for fun.

I am a cat lover though I have none at the moment. I do not care for dogs so have none of those either, but I understand loving your smelly dog. Regardless if it's a crow, bobcat, snake, rat, cat, dog, vulture, Whatever, if it's your pet, keep it from running loose. If you let *any* pet animal out and allow it to run loose, shame on you. Pets killing wildlife are susceptible to diseases and might even kill something that has been poisoned, then die.

So if you don't care about the wildlife, keep them put up for your "dear sweet baby's" sake. If you really and truly do care about and love your pet, you will.

ok, rant off

The area I live is rural/suburban. I hardly ever see a cat around here actually. Lots of people have house cats but don't let them out. Feral cats just can't survive or are taken out by some predator.

I've had cats around 60% of my life and they were mostly indoor kitties although growing up I fed a lot of strays.

As for the torturing thing well I don't think I would want to be one of those small animals a cat plays with. On the other hand I'm not too morally outraged by it either. Animals will usually follow their natures.
