Dogs and cats - Why is it ok for cats to kill things for fun?

Simple delima to me Dogs have the capability to be trained very successfully. a dog is very Co dependant where as a cat is completely independant. A cat will only let it train it if it wants you to. I have seen very few trained cats and I mean trained not some cute trick you saw it do repetativly.if it thinks its gonna get some attention surely it will keep doing your deed. I have seen tons of trained dogsfor better and worse. JMHO

I dont have a stray dog problem, mostly because I have a crazed mule that kills anything that is dog like that enters the pasture, I DID however have a stray cat problem on my 18 acres with some woods and a canal, I noticed my lil wild cottontail rabbits missing in the morning, then a large intact black male cat showed up! Then i heard sqwaking one night and saw the cat stalking one of my chicken tractors, the next evening, it was me, a can of tuna, in camo, on my belly in the tall grass, and my 22 with a scope. At my place cats are just as guilty!

I wish that counties would make it illegal to own a cat unless it has been spayed or neutered and tagged with an updated rabies vacc . I believe they should be kept indoors by their owners, unless the cats owners have a very large area for them to roam and hunt. I despise seeing signs that say (Free Kittens).
So many of them end up neglected and abused.

I used to like cats as a child, but the last cat I owned was such a ruthless hunter. She would hunt songbirds for the sake of the kill. I put her up during the day in my garden shed so that she wouldn't eat so many birds. She certainly wasn't underfed! She killed all the chipmunks around the farm. She tried to catch a few squirells but one of them bit her badly. After that she left them alone. One day she jumped in the back of DH's work truck and took a ride to town. I was sorry about the way she left, but I will NEVER have another cat. She never hunted the stupid mice at the barn. I had to set traps for them while she hunted my pretty songbirds.

One of my neighbors was always picking up those FREE Kittens and bringing the tom cats home with her. She never had them neutered or vetted. They always came over to our house and sprayed my lawn furniture. They were so wild you couldn't even catch them. They fought outside my bedroom window at night and nearly gave me a stroke.

When people take in a pet, they should care for it properly. TLC, vet care, spay-neuter, flea control, wormer and Love!

Wow I really don't like cats!

If you have a cat - keep it on your property just like dog owners are supposed to do. I don't like walking out my front door to smell cat pee or steping on dog poo. I don't own a dog or a cat. We had a dog (which I didn't like) but he is gone now.
I am perfectly happy raising just chickens. I don't wish any harm to any dog or cat, just keep it on your own property.

I don't feel it's ok for one animal to be roaming free to do as it pleases, while another is expected to be contained by its owners... I feel like if you got an animal, hey... take care of it. Which includes keeping it on your own property or person at all times.

A big problem with cats, though, is a lot of them really are truly unhappy being inside and so the owner ends up with an "indoor-outdoor cat" so I see a lot of fat, collared, tagged, friendly pet cats walking around here, almost as much as I see skinny, dangerous strays that would claw your eyes out if you corner it.

I don't know of any good solution but personally, I can say I don't make any exception for any animal - if it's on my property harming my own pets/livestock, it will be dealt with accordingly. That's all I shall say.

I thought I should add this to my previous thoughts about cats. Maybe it's not the cats I don't like. It's the cat owners that are irresponsible that I have a problem with.

I do know people that take good care of their cats and keep them from being a neighborhood nusiance. The neighbor that I was talking about also had a dog as well as 4 cats. She never used any type of flea control on the poor things. You could not imagine how horrible they looked.

When she sold her place and moved out the new owners had to hire a pest control agency to fumigate the house twice. Now, that house is really nice, beautiful in fact. But she was so tight she was not going to spend a dime on those poor animals. I even offered to get them flea collars, but she said no thanks. She ended up taking the dog to the shelter to be euthanized, and just left the cats behind to fend for themselves.

I just love animals, I could not understand her.

I liked the idea that was in the earlier post about having a run outside for the cats. I thought that was a very responsible and creative idea. I wish more people would be so concientious. Cats do have a place in society as beloved pets, just not as inbred, flea totin', bird killin', rabies droolin', mongrels.
