Dogs and Electric Fences

Also, do these fences HURT dogs? I know they hurt, but I mean physically hurt them. I know our pet dogs will be sniffing around and get zapped once.

Unless an animal or human has pretty bad heart issues, getting hit by an electric fence (properly hooked up to a fence box) will not physically hurt them.

If you do like my dad did once and hook it to your AC power from the house or worse, straight to a battery, then YES, it can and will kill. Fence boxes pulse for a reason, it just delivers a very short shock and then turns back off and gives you a chance to run away.

If hooked directly up, the voltage can make your muscles lock and then you get fried because you can't let go of the wire.

Does an electric fence physically HARM a person or animal? No. But it does deliver a painful shock........if you were to touch it.....something along the lines of a sensation that your arm had been violently yanked from its socket. A sensation you really don't want to repeat......so you avoid at all costs. Animals get to feel this too, except dogs and many other predators lead with their nose........so get bopped on the nose......or some might even be enticed to give a fence a lick.......say if you were to drape a piece of raw chicken skin over a hot wire.......strictly by accident of course. I can't even imagine what that might feel like. Perhaps someone on the list will go lick their HOT fence and report back?

And yes, that is a very important point. We are talking about a hot electric fence powered by an electric fence charger designed and built strictly for this purpose. One that sends a high voltage millisecond pulse of potential shock down the line.......about once every second or so.

Under no circumstance should live AC or DC powered electric current be hooked up to an electric fence.

I heard someone telling how they kept deer out of their garden, they put a 1 strand electric fence around it, then wrapped sections in aluminum foil and smeared it with peanut butter... the deer licked the peanut butter and got their tongues zapped! Apparently, the deer ran across the yard with tongues flopping in the breeze and learned not to go near that fence again!

An electric fence will cause pain. But, properly installed, it will not cause injury. In adition to previous safety instruction, it's wise to be sure the fenceing is not "loose".

If someone has cardiac issues, or a pacemaker, it would be wise for them to stay far away! One of the modalities I have used in the practice of physical therapy, is electrical stimulation. This is current which is delivered in a specific wave length and strength to cause a specific muscular response. I have never used E stim on any patient without using it on myself first. Yep. You can cause pain with E stim! But, it can also be used to create the DESIRED response with little or no pain involved.

In the case of a fence charger, you WANT the animal to come in contact with the fence. And you want him to feel some pain! That is the only way they will learn to avoid the area. Baiting the fence with peanut butter or even bacon grease, or some other attractant is a good way to ensure that your target animal benefits from the full shocking experience. An electric fence can be tested with a voltage meter to ensure that it's working properly. However, I choose to do it the old fashioned way: I take my shoe off, touch the ground with my bare toe, and touch the wire with my hand. In short order, I am assured that it works very well. So far as I know, I've not suffered any lasting damage by touching my fence!

I would be very sure that children who are not capable of understanding and obeying safety rules are not allowed near an electric fence when it's on.

touching the fence with one hand and and a metal t post with the other hand, is how I usually accidentally test the fence LOL .. I learned as a child to listen to my parents when they said stay away from the fence.

Ouch! Does it tingle just a bit????!!!!
well I just did it yesterday morning:gig... I had one net 'disconnected' from the other and touched it and the chicken wire around the garden.. the nets were close enough that the charge was arcing across and powering up the other net. .. woke me up that is for sure.
