DOGS

You can try putting cayenne pepper flakes around your chicken coop as dogs don't like the smell of certain spices
Thanks. I know that it may work. Luckily (I guess) I've only had predator issues when my flock is out ranging and not in/at the coop.

I was going to suggest something similar we had a serious problem with our neighbors chow chow. When they walked him he often pooped in our front lawn and no matter what we said they ignored us, he also ran over and demanded food (the dog he was extremely aggressive) . We got something from the store for it, the stuff we put down looked like little white tapioca balls and it supposedly worked on cats and dogs. The next day we watched as our neighbor walked the dog and came over to our house and the dog sniffed and screamed! We didn't have any more problems I wish I could remember the name of that stuff. I would never kill someones pet just because I'm not that kinda person but thats just me, sorry bout your loss and I hope they don't come back.

I think maybe it was moth balls.

Thanks. We are on 5 acres and surrounded by about 100 more so it wouldn't be a possibility here. I'm hoping they don't come back with the threat of arrest if it happens again. I have no problem shooting them but I think they get yelled at to get by people so much they run as soon as they see me.

The dog's owner came to our house this morning. I was a bit nervous as to what to expect. He apologized, offered to compensate and asked that we please contact him in the future if we have a problem. I explained my feelings on the matter and that it only took 4 months for him to think his dogs were being good and to stop chaining them.

He told us that the deputy came to his house twice and the second time shot but did not kill one of the dogs. He was mad about that and I think blames me for having the deputy there in the first place. He said there were feathers in their yard and so he knows it was them. I explained exactly what happened and that I tried to shoot them and would again if need be.

He understands that I'd shoot them and is fine with that. He kept saying if it happens again and then would say its won't, it won't. He took the one that the deputy shot to the vet and says that it won't be a problem. He is going to try to rehome the other one but said that he may shoot it if he can't get rid of it. He insisted on writing me a check for the replacement of the birds and wrote it for $100 because he'd raised chickens before and I'd told him that my hen was thinking about going broody.

I feel bad that his dog got shot especially after he said that the sheriff's office changed their stories about what happened, how many deputies were there and how many times they went. I will probably talk to him if there is a problem again. I did tell him that the deputy told me that I could have had a warrant sworn he was glad that I hadn't.

We're having a problem with one of our neighbors out door cats. It's enraging. We had to buy a cover for our sandbox since the cats use it as a toilet. Found this out in a disgusting way. Had to put a large fence up around the garden since this turned out to be the alternate toilet once the sandbox was unavailable. Then they killed three chickens. I set up a trap and so far have relocated two of them. There's one left....... It's extremely frustrating when you don't have any control over your own property!

Hmmm interesting turn of events. Very weird that a cop would shoot to only wound a dog like that, kinda scary. Hope the check doesn't bounce and the neighbor is sincere.

That was my thought, too. A deputy would not shoot to wound. It would have been killed. Also, I would think that he wouldn't have just up and shot the dog without the owner's consent (unless, of course, the dog attacked him). It sounds suspicious to me.

Your police take things much more serious than ours, they don't give a darn about roaming dogs. All they do is issue citations and they have to have about a million complaints before they will even do that. Then the leave the dogs running loose rather than attempting to capture them and take them to the pound or kill them. I just finally got a problem neighbor a ticket 2 days ago, but that will not teach him anything.
